Look for a local woodworking guild and post a request for someone to build cabinets for a GMC on their news letter. Do the same at the local high school if they have a woodworking program. You just never know who/what you might turn up, Cabinet shops are usually into production boxes with fancy fronts. That is where they make their money. They are neither jigged up for or experienced in building things that fit a curved space. Furniture makers are. Unless the cabinet unit itself is trash, have someone just make doors and drawer fronts for you. You can always paint the carcass and with properly made new doors your interior will shout out - good stuff!

Well Jim, Aluminum may not be the best material but working with aluminum sheet metal is what I do.

I didn't build them to save weight, that's just a free benefit of the material. My old cabinets were junk and having new wooden ones made would cost
more than my aluminum ones. And that is IF I can find a cabinet shop willing to take on a small odd job with demanding specs that is not a typical
household configuration. I went that route last year and couldn't find any local job willing to tackle the overhead cabinets. The one place that was
willing wanted $1500.

Good point Jerry, I am going to be replacing my interior woodwork this next winter.

Never considered the woodshop at the high school.

When I was in school we built all kinds of stuff for other people (customers).....

That was the problem Jerry, the particle board was sawdust. Last year, I replaced some components and built new doors. Decided to use wood veneer to wrap the remains of the original cabinet and the new wood. Then I decided to paint it with automotive paint which reacted with the contact cement used to put the veneer on the original formica. It split and buckled and I just couldn't stand it so out the came. The doors looked good though. Laughing

Hey, I'm all for it and those that were there know Daren and I were good friend.  I supported his efforts abd installed sev we ral sets .  Work with what you know, bet you can do some fancy things.  Its all good but if you were looking for someone to build aluminum cabinets that did not know how to work the stuff, it would take a long time to master building them and paying someone to do it would be involved.

Even the discovery to know many issues will add to what it will take to do it .  I look at things on their merit and what was the totl hassle to do it.

If you can do varied things with tin or aluminum I wish you lived down here...

That's right, we clean up the original carcus if possible then laminate that.  You can have door and drawer fronts made at HomeDepot, get new hardware and put it together.  I have done many cabinets and bulkhead walls for that matter.

If its too far gone, you can use it as a pattern.  Its not that compkicated a job unless you want it to be.  The trick is to know how to fit it all together for an overall look and feel

I agree that not everyone has the equipment or skills to make metal parts but not everyone has woodworking skills either. I actually have pretty nice wood shop and built the cabinets in our house but working in metal (aluminum) is easier for me than wood. My design looks a good bit like Daren's but it's actually made considerably differently. Not necessarily better but easier for me to fabricate and a bit less expensive to build.

We'll see how we like them after the Wisconsin rally.

To maybe help your design, Daren's had a few things for me to over come.
The hold up hinges I use need @ 1" of lip on the openings to attach them.
Also we had to fab a wood floor in the cabinet so the lights mounted on the
underside could be covered and allow for a flat floor inside. We had to
make padded end caps to cover the side construction of the cabinet, it did
not look finished. The forward lip should be a bit longer to be sure you
are in line with the aluminum rib in the headliner. We had the bedroom
cabinets made 4" deeper for more storage. Powder coating made the finish
but because of the inside angles, the charged particle sprayer did not
cover the inside corners well-- too much magnetic interaction. The inside
of the cabinet had to be felt lined so things inside would not rattle.

Last thing was you could make no mistakes mounting them, a hole n the wrong
place is there forever with no way to fill or finish over it.

Ponder these things as you design your cabinets,

Jim Bounds
