We would like recommendations for replacement shaft rocker arm assemblies for our Cadillac
500 engine.

Ideally, the replacement shaft rocker system would:

1: Use off the shelf or easily obtainable pushrods (Cadillac or others)
2: Use off the shelf or easily obtainable rocker arms
3: Be a bolt in replacement
4: and clear the original Cad 500 valve covers.

We realize all these conditions may not be met in any one set.

Please tell us what systems you have used on your Cad 500 engine and why, or any sets that you think are good replacement systems.

After having seen that a couple of forum members have broken a Cad 500 rocker arm stand on
the road, popped a lifter and lost oil pressure with very inconvenient results; we would like to make the rocker arm change now.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Don and Susan Jeffers

Not sure what Cad Co has, but here is the URL for MTS and their Rocker sets.

http://www.mtscadparts.net/servlet/Categories

I bought the MTS Roller Tipped Shaft Rocker system, NON-Adjustable, full support - 1.70 ratio.
Don't know yet how it is going to work out as it was shipped to me yesterday.

1: Use off the shelf or easily obtainable pushrods (Cadillac or others)
Uses their Pushrods designed for this rocker set off of their shelf NOT standard cadillac.
2: Use off the shelf or easily obtainable rocker arms
Comes as a complete set of rockers designed and built for MTS.
3: Be a bolt in replacement
Bolt on replacement
4: and clear the original Cad 500 valve covers.
Does not cleat original covers. Had to buy chrome covers that will clear the rockers.

Try getting ahold of Ken H. After having some valve train troubles, he went to one of the MTS systems.

Thanks Larry, and Jim K too in another thread.

I did contact Ken H. and he pointed out his system required the vendor's 1/4" thick valve cover gaskets for rocker clearance.

That is the kind of detail I would like to hear about. You can't usually get those minor details in the vendor's short write-ups in their catalogs.

Don,
The rockers may or may not clear the rocker cover depending on what cam you have. Just to be on the safe side, place the gasket and valve cover in place. Then pull the coil wire or somehow disable ignition so it will not start. Then turn the motor over with your hand on the covers. If the rockers are hitting the valve cover, you will feel it. If they do not hit the inside of the cover, I would tighten the cover bolts, and start the motor....being prepared to shut off immediately if you hear the rockers hitting. Tightening the cover bolts will carry the cover closer to the rockers...maybe close enough to hit. Just what I'd do....

Putting on double gasket is not a good practice on vehicles that travel
thousand miles.
I told you that you only need the ones that fit under the standard covers.
I should know as I have more miles on Cad motors with the tube rockers than
all.

I know it is a free world, but hate to have people on side of the road with
oil leaks from the valve gaskets.
It is not as bad as having studs holding the head than bolts.
In other words, I cannot say too much about what is good to do or not.
I know few racers that use it on the drag stip, but it is 1/4 of a mile.
