I have saved the GMC digest postings since May 2010, a total of just over 10,000 postings, all of which is 275 MB on my hard drive.

I would like to save this .dbx file on my GMC flash drive so that I could use this information for reference on another computer if I needed to.

My question for the computer savvy population here is it just that simple? Copy the file to my flash drive and then open it sometime later on another computer? If it matters I'm using Outlook Express for my e-mails.

Thanks, Bill Brown

.dbx file format is unique to Microsoft Outlook Express. You can just copy the files to another location, but that location will have to have Outlook Express installed, if you want to access them. There are "reader" programs that will read these files, Microsoft Outlook Express is free.

"Files that contain the .dbx file extension are used by the Microsoft Outlook Express email application. The DBX files contain folders that have been created by the Microsoft Outlook Express email program. These folders contain the email messages that are stored in a specific mailbox.

Each mailbox that is in a user's Outlook interface will have its own DBX file. For example, the Outlook "Inbox" will have a corresponding inbox.dbx file. The "Sent" mail folder will have a sent.dbx file. A DBX file will be assigned to each of the user's Outlook Express folders, including the custom folders that are created by the user. The DBX files can then be copied to another location so that a user can back up their email messages or transfer their emails to another computer when needed." Copied from Web site.

Hope this helps.

Bill,

As Tom said, *.dbx is an OE proprietary file format. That may be a stopper in the future, but there are file converters and *.dbx readers available.

carguy,

Probably the easiest way to do what you want is to convert the awful, proprietary .dbx format to the standard, ascii .mbox format. If you install the Thunderbird email client, you SHOULD be able to import the .dbx file and have it convert it to .mbox (there are mixed reviews as to the success rate.) The information will still appears as emails, but as they are in ascii, you should be able to search through the resulting .mbox files with any tool.
