Greetings...

I don't hear the typical "roar" than is often mentioned...

Other than an overheating issue when my radiator cap wasn't completely tight, I run pretty consistently at 190 - 200 degrees.

Might I be lucky enough to have a quietly working fan and fan clutch ?? Or is it not working at all ??

Any other easy diagnostics to check ??

As always, thank you for all of the advice and expertise here.

Your fan clutch may not be working at all. With the engine stopped the fluid in the clutch settles to the bottom and on start up the fan should spin full on, thus "the roar". However depending on the clutch and fan it may not ROAR but only whisper more than normal. The way to tell is to listen to it when you start and see if whatever noise you have quiets down in a somewhat less than a minute. If you do not hear this backdown in volume then your clutch is bad.

If you don't overheat in traffic or low speeds then your fan clutch is working.

If you really want to be sure your fan is operating correctly, follow the test procedure in the Service Manual Section 6K-8 & 9

Steve,

While you should do a proper diagnosis as cited below if you have any doubt, there is always the cheap and sleazy test. (Isn't there always?)

Open the engine hatch.
Lay down your belly board, if you don't have one, make one as you will need it.
With the engine cold (and not running - duh), grab a fan blade and try to spin the fan.
You should be able to push in and it should move some and smoothly. It is most likely OK.
If it spins easily, the clutch is completely gone. If the fan seems loose on the shaft, don't run it as it may get loose and do damage.

Matt
