Hi,
Today I started removing the cockpit elements. This is the last part of the interior that needs to be removed. I removed the cockpit side panels and the passenger seat and base. The plywood under the side panels is rotten from water damage. There was one mouse nest around the gas pipe behind the drivers side panel. There was a giant mouse nest in the front dash passenger corner that was exposed when I removed the passenger side panel. The entire passenger corner section was filled with nesting material.
The top plastic roof of the cockpit came down pretty easily and I was able to remove without any damage. It should cleanup nice.
My question is that behind the glove box in the lower corner is an opening I assume into the blower box. Should there be a cover plate over that opening?
Half of the opening is behind the glove box and half is below in the passenger floor area which is covered by a small wire grate.
Should there be any opening on the passenger floor?

David,
Since I have a '76 vs your '77. this may not be applicable and I can't open
the URL to verify that. But it sounds as if you're talking about the
passenger's foot heat outlet. Look under the right front hood and you
should see the plastic duct which feeds that outlet. The grill isn't familiar
though -- every one I've seen is just a bare hole, so there may have been
some PO tampering (maybe thinking he was excluding those mice?).

My mistake. There IS a difference between the '76 and the '77. That
opening is for return air to the HVAC. That opens into the plenum from
which the fan draws air to blow though the rest of the system. It does
look like a PO added some hardware cloth over part of it.
That opening is one that modifiers of '76 and earlier coaches must create
to enable their HVACs to use recirculated air rather than only outside air.

Thank you for the help in identifying the return. I was able to search some of the pictures of other coaches and see the difference in the a/c and heat system modifications for different years.

Unless there is an overwhelming reason, I would not remove the main plastic
dash panel. It's made of ABS plastic and after 30+ years of the sun it's
really brittle. The alternatives to replacing the panel are not that
exciting. I would leave the main dash in place & work around it. You can
refinish the panel in place with greated effectiveness than removing it
even if it did come out which I have never seen one come out well.
Please thing twice before removing it, think about what you ill put back
into the 3d front end and how it will trim out...
