I stopped by an old gent's farm today to buy an Aloris tool post and holders
for my lathe. I happily spent the $200 on the set, then proceeded to spend
another $200 on a boatload of machine shop stuff. It's a sickness I tell
ya...

In the haul is a X-4 torque multiplier in great condition. This is a genuine
made in the USA product! It appears to be a model LW-750 Torque Multiplier
providing up to 1000 ft-lbs of output torque and features a 1/2"square input
drive, 3/4" square output drive and 4 to 1 multiplication factor. I seem to
remember a discussion several months ago about using these for our lug nuts.
Does anyone else use this model? How do you like it? I think it will find a
permanent spot in my GMC tool box.

I need to purchase the extended handle, but overall not a bad purchase for
$10.

I use one very similar to torque 1" bolts to 1000 ft lbs. The actual output is more like 3.4 : 1 rather than 4:1 due to friction. It's a three handed job to operate. I would rather have a long handle torque wrench for lug nuts and other things up to 350 ft lbs. It's a very nice tool for anything over that. Especially for $10.

You really don’t need this for the wheel nuts of our GMC’s unless your still running the stock steel wheels which need close to 240 ft/lbs of torque. The Alcoa and Eagle wheels need only 140 to 150 ft/lbs. It could be used on the front axle nuts as they require a hefty 250+ ft/lbs. Don’t know what kind of nuts that people are using with the newer steel wheels. Did find this info.

Guy,
Boy that was a heck of a deal for $10, and I'm jealous. The only time I've used a torque multiplier was when I went for dealer service tech training on rear axles, where the are recommended for the pinion nut to properly crush the crush sleeve. The classrooms had nice Snap-On ones, but no one else could afford them. I think they were $400 back then in the 70's and I think they are over $1,000 now. What kind of lathe did you get the Aloris for? I have an Emco Maximat V10 that I want one for, but apparently there isn't one that is a direct fit without either machining some kind of adaptor for it or milling down the top of the cross slide.
