When I removed the water tank to clean it and install access panels, I decided that the 40 year old green shag carpet had to go. It smelled funny and had seen many, many mouse turds. So I pulled it up. Wow, was that a pain. It seems that the carpets were installed first, then walls, furniture, beds, etc, were installed on top of the carpet making it very difficult to remove. But with a judicious application of pliers and muscle power, I was able to get it off. Holy crap was it dusty!
So I had to decide what to replace it with. I had started to investigate soundproofing materials and was dismayed at the costs. We still have employment issues here, so keeping costs in check is very important. So, no dedicated soundproofing materials. I also wanted a bit of insulative properties and since this was under the water tank with its' associated hoses, I wanted something waterproof as well. With that in mind, I started looking at a combination of indoor/outdoor padding and carpeting. I was a bit underwhelmed with what I saw at the local big box stores. I then thought about cutting up some of the floor mats that are designed to connect together like puzzle pieces. That would give me something waterproof, and some sound and weather insulation although it wouldn't look great with all the seams.
Then I found this!

Installed it looks like this!

I used short screws with large fender washers to keep everything tight. It is very easy to cut, doesn't have a rubber smell and at 4' x 3' a lot of area can be covered with few seams. I am liking it a lot more than the carpet! I am hoping to get the generator side done before my trip next week, but we shall see. There are a lot more things to do first.
