It took a while, but I was able to remove the buzz box and replace it with a PD9260. I had to install a separate fuse box and grounding bar as the original were integrated in the buzz box. So there was a bit of reengineering and rewiring, but it is now working.
My question has to do with how the PD9260 charges the batteries. The documentation says it can handle multiple batteries and will charge them approrpriately without overcharging. Since all of our batteries are connected or cross connected, how does the unit charge different battery types with different charging needs? Or does it?

Bob,
You may have misunderstood the PD's statement. The 92XX series can effectively handle different types of battery banks. It can handle banks of identical batteries, but it cannot handle banks composed of different types of batteries. (i.e. A banks of paralleled automotive, golf cart and any AGM.)
The 92XX series cannot properly maintain mixed battery types in parallel and nothing else can either. The explanation is long and technical, but I will try if you are interested. If banks are made of paralleled batteries, it may already be in trouble, but just building a bank of paralleled jars is already a problem in the long run.
Did that clear up anything? If not, I can try again.

Matt,
That is what I figured. My confusion began when I installed the PD9260 and saw that it was charging a battery. I have my house battery removed as I am replacing it with 2 6v golf batteries yet the 12v electrical system is still operating so I have fans, etc inside the coach. The power for these is coming from somewhere which got me wondering about how the PDxxxx recognizes batteries. I may have an issue with how the PO connected batteries.
My 76 Royale has a battery in the back by the generator, with what I have been told is the starting battery and the house battery up front. I think I need to follow all of these battery cables to see where they are going. I have a sinking feeling that a PO got creative with them.
I am now looking through my manuals to see exactly how the batteries are supposed to be run and where they are supposed to be connected. If anyone has a simple diagram, I'd love to see it!
EDIT: I have found a note in one of the PO's manuals that he may have switched the starter and house batteries around. So what I thought was the house battery was actually the starter battery. That didn't even occur to me as I can start the coach as well as run the 12v system.

Bob (aka Thorndike),
Royales were transmodes fitted out by Coachman As shipped (as a transmode) the only house battery was in the front. This left a great place to put a house bank next to the APU. If there are still batteries in the back, that may be where the power of the house is now coming from. At least Coachman did document the installation to some extent. Now, if you put house bank at both ends, this can work, but you will never be able to know the true state of both parts.

The PD9620 comes with a pendant attachment that displays the current charging mode. Since this LED display changes as we use the 12v system, I assume it is charging a battery. I spent the day under the coach tracking wires and will put all this information under a new topic. I learned a bit more and, of course, have a few more questions.
Thanks!

How do you know it is charging a battery? When you have the converter powered by shore power or generator, you can remove the house battery and all the 12V stuff will operate just fine without the house battery.

Bob,
It's doubtful that your starting battery is in the rear. If it is, unless
a PO replaced the starter cable with a much larger one, your stater must
turn over VERY slowly -- probably too slowly to start the engine.
Regardless of what you find, my personal suggestion would be to install a
Ragusa 3-battery tray (about $100) under the passenger's feet. It will
accept a Group 27 chassis battery and two 6-volt golf cart batteries,
leaving room around them for a few bottles of motor oil, etc. That will
provide adequate power storage unless you do a lot of dry camping. And it
will free up the rear space for much-needed external storage of other
"stuff". Most of the large power requirements are up front, so that's
where the batteries need to be, IMHO.
