Well, I had a little more fun this morning. Got in the coach that wouldn't
run last evening. Turned the key and drove it back into the shelter! I've
got a new fuel pump coming.

Then I tackled the Tailgater again. I moved it to the eastern side of our
yard to get a line of sight over the tall trees to the west. After several
attempts, I finally got satellites 110* and 119*, but still no 129*.

I've since learned that Winegard makes a similar antenna, the Pathway X2,
which DOES work with both the eastern and western arc satellite arrays.
(NOT the Pathway X1, which also gets only the western arc.) It's [/color]

Ken, we got rid of the Batwing Winegard roof antennae. Then we got rid of
the TV. Don't miss it much. Nothing much on it that interests us. Do not
have either of those dish in a bucket antenna systems, but I do work on
them for owners that want them. They seem to work well in Oregon, don't
know how well they do in the mid west and east. I have a video that I took
through the side windows of my coach of a couple in a 5th wheel trying to
orient and set up a small dish. Judy and I laughed until our sides hurt
watching the antics with compass, wooden wedges, animated gestures, loud
proclamations, multiple trips back and forth into the 5th wheel and back to
the dish. Don't know if they ever got a picture, but it sure provided us
with an evening of comedy entertainment. Kinda like watching the Lucy Show.
But now when I think about it, it might have been the wine that Judy and I
were drinking. Slept well in any event. Another adventure in the GMC. Good
luck with your TV.

Jim,

I, too, can do without TV. During Dennis' and my trip west last year, we
probably didn't watch 2 hours of TV in 2 months. But SHE likes to stay
abreast of what's going on in the world and doesn't much care for using a
computer, so this exercise is all for her (maybe I'll make her pay out of
her SS check. :-) )

When satellites first became popular, I used a tripod-mounted dish and
found it pretty easy to use, as long as I had a signal strength meter.
Later, I put a dish on the GMC's crank-up, and that worked OK -- as long
as we parked "in the sun". Somehow that worked itself loose and hopefully
didn't hit anyone behind us whenever it departed -- it may have been months
before I noticed since we'd long before quit carrying a receiver along.

This new "antenna in a bucket" thing is, like so many things these days,
supposed to be "idiot proof" -- to the extent that if it won't work right
under the management of an idiot, everyone else might as well give up. :-)

Hey Ken, I used a Tailgater with my receiver in the past with no problems. I always put the handle side facing north so the whole other sides of the cube faced South. You definitely have to be out of the trees due to the small size of the dish inside the cube. 129 will be a westerly satellite from the other two. Make sure you have the 222 Dish receiver also. When you hook up the Tailgater to the receiver it should ask what state you are in...that will help it find the satellites also...Always enjoyed the ease of using the Tailgater...Good luck, Glenn

Well, I am miserable without TV. I like it all - mindless sitcoms with canned laughter, shoot 'em up detective shows, news weather - whatever. When I am in my house there are always televisions on. I even leave the tv on when she's out of town and I'm sleeping alone.

She doesn't care for TV but likes movies. We have a little TV dvd combination. She buys movies for .25 each at our church thrift store and we donate them back after they've been watched. When we have no reception we go to Red Box and rent movies and sometimes (if we have WiFi) we use Chromecast to watch Netflix.

Sitting outside this time of year in the deep south is just asking for trouble. Mosquitoes and (where I live) gnats will drag you into the woods and devour you in short order.

Ken, if this satellite thing is truly "idiot proof" I might just have to have one. Smile

Thanks, Glenn.

The documentation is sort of sketchy. Only one place in the manual or the
setup pamphlet says to turn the handle north. Fortunately I found that
before I started my frustration exercise. When I finally did talk to Dish
support, the furrin gal tried to get me to turn the handle toward the
satellites -- until I insisted that she verify that. Then she said "leave
it turned north". The local Dish technician, who has the exact Az/El for
each satellite memorized said it really doesn't matter except that it gives
the logic a known starting position, I'm sure there's a dead zone near the
handle where the gear train MUST reverse.

Even moving 100 yards east of the tall trees, I stil had to put the TG on
top of a ladder before I ever got even a marginal (25%) signal on 129.

The receiver they're delivering in the bundle now is a 211Z.

The current instructions say to unplug the receiver from 120 vac for 10 s.
after any antenna repositioning to restart the scan at location entry.
There are other ways to get that option, but I won't try them until I gain
more proficiency and know I've got a clear view of the sats.

Apparently our local stations are not broadcast on the western sats at all
because since I haven't yet been able to find one. I'd hoped to use the TG
outside the kitchen, where the best westerly view is, to provide reception
there for watching the evening news. Since that's the only time we turn
that TV on, I did not have a Joey receiver installed there -- too stingy to
spend $7.00 per month just to see the garbage on there. :-)

Thanks, Rob. Now maybe I can suppress the desire to take the cover off! :-)

I'm still like my son, about whom we were talking yesterday:: We brought

Like father, like son. Part of being an "engineer at heart", I guess. :-)

Hey Ken, yeah sounds like you are still hitting some trees if you only had about a 25 signal level on 129. A little background, I started out installing the big dishes years ago and then the small dishes when they came out and still mess with them for friends. I went with the Tailgater because of the ease of setup instead of carrying a dish and tripod with me and then having to sight it in each time you moved your camper. Also the Tailgater (or any of the cubed dishes) is a better idea than the roof mounted ones as you are invariably camping under a tree which blocks their line of sight, so anyone that has a roof mounted dish also carries a portable dish. The Tailgater is also a lot cheaper than the roof mounted units which is a plus. So seems to me you still need to move the dish further to the east or higher up on that ladder for 129. Your locals are now spot beamed for your specific state. When you setup the Tailgater you have to tell it which state you are in to help it find the satellites. There is also a mount you can buy for the tailgater (or make one) that allows you to mount it on your ladder. Would be ok as long as you had a clear line of sight to the satellites...or you could use the mount as a place to store the antenna and then remove and set out when you get to your camping area. Not much space inside the GMC to carry everything...lol...I'm planning on putting my satellite and cable connections in the propane tank storage area and will leave the coax coiled up in there and just have to pull it out and connect to the Tailgater or to cable if ever anywhere that is available for short term camping...lol..but I love the HD we get now and can't watch non HD channels..lol..Good luck and any help I can give just give me a shout. Glenn,

If I had it to do over again, I'd probably try the Winegard Pathway X2,
which, for about $100 more, receives both east and west arc satellites.
But since most people seem to like their Tailgater, I'll probably keep it.
Especially since Amazon had a price reduction on the bundle (Tailgater,
211Z receiver, & 50' of RG6) from $449.99 to $414.99 within 7 days of my
delivery -- they credited me with the difference yesterday; at my request,
of course.

This is one of the few times I wish I hadn't removed the ladder from the
GMC 12 years ago; it would be nice to use it, when feasible, to position
and secure the Tailgater. Maybe I'll rig a pole mount. Before I even
connected the Tailgater I re-wired all of my old RF connections with an
added switch to select the Tailgater. And I started testing the Tailgater
with the existing installed coax. But when it didn't come up the first
time, I wired it direct with the included RG6 to eliminate as many
potential problems as possible. I haven't yet gotten to a geographic or
confidence position where I can reconnect via the coach's wiring. It'll
all work out eventually. :-)

Hey Ken, we all have a few regrets in life...lol...a ladder isn't so bad. I think you'll like the Tailgater once you use it and get used to setting it up and finding a clear southerly/westerly direction...they work great and are easy to use. One of the things you don't want to do is have any switches or connections between the Tailgater and your receiver, any additional connections will rob you of signal and since the dish is already small you don't want to lose any signal. I suggest maybe you get a 100 ft piece of RG 6 coax to use instead of the 50, will give you more room to maneuver in case of trees or other obstructions. Just make sure the end that will attach to the Tailgater has a waterproof connector installed on it. Since you removed your ladder, maybe you could use the old bolt holes and attach a plate or something to the GMC for the Tailgater to attach to. You could always stand on the bumper to remove it. Just remember wherever you attach it you will have to be able to remove it unless you always park with a clear line of sight to the south for the Tailgater. I don't think you want to have to carry a pole or anything with you as that is just more to hassle with when setting up and you also would run the risk of it accidentally falling over and breaking your Tailgater. I'm sure with a little practice and once you get used to how easy it is to use you will be happy with your decision to go with the Tailgater. I purchased one right after they first came out as I already had the HD receiver that would work with it. Whenever we camp we just take that one with us...Would be nice to have a second receiver but don't really feel the need for the extra cost...lol..Just leave your receiver unplugged until you connect your Tailgater and then plug in your receiver, turn on your tv and it only takes a couple of minutes before you can watch tv. As far as your locals when travelling you won't be able to get them once you leave your home state area as they are spot beamed now to geographic areas, the only way to get local stations is you have to call Dish and then you can only get the stations where you are located at the time, not worth the hassle, easier just to crank up the old Winegard and get your locals...another reason to not use any switches, leave your Winegard connected directly to your tv and your satellite connected to your tv via the HDMI cable. I also like taking movies with me and I put everything on a hard drive now and use a WDTV Media Player that connects to my tv via a HDMI cable also. For better sound I have a Samsung Soundbar with a wireless subwoofer that has two connections allowing me to connect both my Satellite Receiver and my WDTV player and get Dolby Digital or DTS sound. The great thing about a soundbar is it doesn't take up much room and you don't need a Surround Sound Receiver with 5 speakers and a subwoofer, just the soundbar and wireless sub which can be located behind a chair or somewhere out of the way. I mounted my subwoofer above my tv on the mounting bracket I built for my tv. I used 1 inch steel square tubing (2 ea.) cut to length to fit underneath the cabinet on the passenger side I attached the 2 pieces of tubing to the bottom of the cabinet and to the floor using 1 inch angle iron that was cut into 3 inch pieces and drilled and bolted to the tubing and then drilled two holes in the ends in order to attach the (feet) to the cabinet and the floor. This not only makes a sturdy support but also looks nice and gives you a place to wire tie your wires to in order to run them from your components to the tv. In order to mount the tv to the two tubes I had a piece of plate cut that I drilled an bolted to each tube. I think it was 1/8 th inch thick, you could also use aluminum. Mine was 18 inches long and 6 inches tall. I was mounting a 40 inch LED tv to the 2 tubes. I also mounted a plate above where the tv was going to mount in order to mount the Soundbar. It was 3 inches by 18 inches long...You can't see the plate behind the Soundbar this way. In order to get your tv and your soundbar mounted on the tubes where you want them you need to figure out where to mount the plates to the tubes. So the easiest way is to mount the soundbar plate first, since mine is above the tv it was easy as I just measured from the top of the tubes down to where I wanted the soundbar located and drilled 2 holes in each end to attach the plate to the tubes. Then drill the mounting holes for your soundbar. Now you need to measure from the bottom of the soundbar down to the center of where the tv mounts are on the back of the tv. I left about a 1/2 inch between the top of the tv and the bottom of the soundbar. Once you get that measurement you can attach the mounting plate to the tubes by drilling and bolting it to the tubes. Remember that the measurement for the placement of the tv is the center of the mount area on the back of the tv..so the center of the plate will be that measurement when attached to the tubes. Then get your measurement for the mounting holes for the back of the tv and drill those in the tv mounting plate and attach the tv to that....To visualize the tv stand I made, just think of it as an H . Before installing in my camper I painted all the pieces black...you can paint it any color you want to customize. Then I mounted it in the camper and then attached my tv and soundbar, ran all the wires up inside the cabinet where all my components are and done...The thing about the plates is that once the tv and soundbar are installed you don't see anything except some of the tubing at the bottom. In my Class C I added an 18 inch table top underneath the tv to the tubes and an electric fireplace underneath the tabletop...looks pretty sweet...and functional as well. So let your imagination run wild on what you want to do to customize to your situation and likes. Sorry for the long winded explanation. Tried attaching picture but too big....Good luck Glenn.
