I read where a GMC'er lost all his axle bolts on one axle & had to be towed
to the next town.
I'm getting my 26' Painted Desert ready for a 5,000 mile plus trip this
month.
After reading this, I checked my axles & sure enough the bolts were loose on
both axles & a bolt was missing on the drivers side axle.
I only have about 15,000 miles on the final drive & that's when I replaced
all of the bolts & lock washers
& never thought to check them.
I have since taken Jim Hupy's advice & put red locktite on all the axle
bolts & torqued them at 75 pounds.
If I hadn't read about this on the net, I can't imagine what would have
happened on my trip.
I have owned my 23' ? for 31 years & never had a problem with axle bolts so
never thought to check them on the Painted Desert.
This is one of the values of sharing your experiences that you have &
putting them on the net.
Thank you net.

I just checked mine while it was jacked up for a flat. They are tight but my brake pads are in need of replacement at 20k.

That was me.

All in (towing, repairs, parts, accommodations) it cost about $2,500, lost a day and a half on the road, and after we got home my wife swore she would never ever take another trip in the GMC. (We'll see)

I will ALWAYS check the bolts before a long trip now. Even if I am going by myself....

I may have some experiences to share after this weekend. Bringing a
recent purchase home after it has been unused for some time. Fluids and
pressures all checked. Runs smooth and straight. We will see what the
first a hundred miles shows. I have some tools but carrying too much to
it is not practical (battery, gas can, hoses etc.) as I am a walk on ferry
passenger to get to the coach. Wish me luck.

Cheers;
Bob

I would have thought Loctite blue would be more appropriate. Red requires heat to break, IIRC.

It is always the driver's side that comes loose for some reason. If you torqued them and added a dab of red locktite, you should be OK in the future.

Still check them a few more times in the future.

Yes, but DO NOT USE RED LOCTITE. USE BLUE THREADLOCKER. YOU WILL HAVE TO
USE HEAT TO REMOVE THE BOLTS IF YOU USE RED. (SHOUTING OFF)

I lost all but one on the drivers side of my Eldo years back ONCE.It will never happen again!
I should have seen when I put in a quart of oil, pull out and Bang.Only bolt that was left finally broke when the end cammed around hit the frame lifted the motor out of the car,fan blades are breaking and smashing into the hood clinking into the hood.I had to drill it out of the plate to whack in a new shaft.I now also have a chain welded to the frame attached to the motor mount so the engine will not come out of the car again on its own...

I went by what you said on your thread about what you use when installing
axle bolts.
You said that you used RED locktite.
I read it twice to make sure because I know that you have to apply heat to
get them out.
Too late now as all the bolts are in with RED locktite.

Jim D,

Don't worry about it; I used NOTHING BUT red Locktite for 5 years when I was building Harley-Davidson's in Hong Kong. I took many
bolts out that I had installed with red Loctite WITHOUT heat.

You just have to apply constant torque above what the bolts were tightened to and they will come loose.

I will echo what Rob M said. I have used red loc-tite on lots of smaller motorcycle bolts and have never needed heat to remove. I also do not flood the bolt across its entire threaded section tho.

At our shop, I insist on using blue lock tite.
It is quite a neat chemical, there are two things that set it off;
Lack of oxygen and metallic ion.
They are not cheap, but it is a necessary part of a shop.
also on the flex plate and torque converter.

Thanks Rob;
I'm going to replace all the bolts & locks when I get back from the trip &
will let you know how the old bolts came out.
If they don't come out too bad I will stay with the red locktite otherwise
I'll use the grey.
Take care.

Jim,

When you get back from your trip if the bolts are all tight why would you bother replacing them?
