Greetings Gentlemen:
I'm going to calibrate my engine oil dipstick as I've heard of the importance of that. I can't remember how much oil to use, but I thought I heard was 5 qts. I thought that was low, but I think that's what I was told. The operating manual says 6 qts w/filter. Also, mine has oil cooler - unknown capacity - does the oil cooler change that capacity significantly? I want to determine this once and for all so I know how much oil is in there, having just made the assumption in the past that the "add" and "full" marks were accurate.

I'm not in need of too much info here. Just the starting amount of oil to use. The procedure's pretty straight forward. I just don't remember and don't know where to find it. It's probably in some thread somewhere on here. Thanks in advance!

5 quarts with filter change. The oil does not drain out of the cooler during an oil change so you are not replacing any additional oil due to the cooler. The 6th quart that you are worried about also did not drain because it is trapped in the front of the oil pan in front of the axle.

According to GMC Motorhome.com the engine takes 5 quarts plus 1 for filter change, 6 total with filter.

That is true for a dry fill. If you can drain the left over quart out of the front of the oil pan, it will take 6 quarts. A few people have installed a second drain plug to get that last quart out on an oil change. If you have the second plug then it will take 6 quarts with filter.

Exactly the info I was looking for. You know how something rattles in your head after hearing it but fades after awhile - that's what I had going on. I do believe I've been over-filling.

Thanks very much, Ken! Now I do feel like a dipstick! But wiser.

Does this mean it's back up and running? Cool

Bill,
At the Convention, when the presentes speak, they have been sending the
mesage.
We find that the additional quart gets burned up too fast and we get blamed
for a poor engine job.
We have experienced with many units that were experiencing oil consumption
issue.
Solved 80% of them by having them run a quart low.

On my coach with an unmodified dipstick, 5 quarts of replacement oil on an oil change puts the reading exactly on the full mark. Adding a quart for 6 total causes the engine to use or burn off that quart in the first 700 or 800 miles. The next quart takes 6000 miles to burn off and by that time it is time to change oil again. I use Rotella 15W40 oil and a 180 degree thermostat. I change it at 6K miles or annually before parking for the winter which ever comes first.

Thanks for the input.
The dip stick on my coach must be out of calibration
I've been putting 6 quarts in at oil change with filter and it shows full.
