Well it appears that I am about to join the crazy world of GMC owners! After searching Craigs list daily for over 3 months, Jim Bounds sent me an email recently regarding a 23’ coach for sale in Jupiter Fla. Jim has previously done many mechanical upgrades :-) and knows the coach well. I have tentatively come to an agreement with the current owner. I will be flying to Fla on Friday the 22nd to inspect and pick it up. Then for the weekend I plan on camping at JONATHAN DICKINSON State park in Jupiter, before driving to Orlando on Monday the 25th. I will be dropping the coach off at Jim Bounds Coop to have another round of mechanical servicing and upgrades done. I flew in on purpose early so that I could spend a few days camping in it before I turned the coach over for additional work.
If anyone wants to come on by and celebrate with a newbee, and help me play with what could be done (or not to do) with the coach, that would be great! The coach appears to be in pretty good shape, and am looking forward to starting this crazy journey. I’ve wanted one of these since I was in College!

A note on crags list searches. I found there are several (just google “Craigs list national search” and you will get many search engines). They each vary a bit in what they return, so a diligent search would include several of them. I went to the Tempest search a couple of times a day, and would get somewhat different results each time I ran it! Also I found that the national search engines did not pick up all the results, so still ended up also doing a Crags list local search for many of the major cities across the country to make sure I found most everything for sale. Also keep an eye on the Facebook pages for GMCs as some coaches are advertised there as well. Unfortunately, in my case, I found the major online advertisers (Bethune, RV Trader, and many others) to have mostly outdated ads, and they have refused to remove them even after I told them the coaches were already sold. Aarg! Then after all that work, all it took was an email from Jim. :-) Go figure…..

Hope to see some of you in Fla soon.

Regards

Why is it people buy coaches on the opposite coast? I have moved numerous coaches for people both west to east and east to west.

Mine came from LA and I'm in Indiana.

Speaking as one that brought a coach from Georgia to Oregon, could it be that GMC owners are contrary? Rolling Eyes

I,m a Seattle homeboy who has always worked and never really gone on
vacations out of washington I use buying gmc's as excues to go to places
(addiction) that I would never have dreamt of going to, it;s alway's an
adventure you meet the greatest people ( shout out to Jon Roche and his
family) gmcws this spring in hemet Dave degraff I would never have met
these people otherwise. I have a 78 royale that sits while I go off and buy
these other units. I'm playing with my sons college money til I need to pay
off his loan when he gets out of school. in the mean time Gourdine wants
me to bring one down to the desert another excuse to go meet people, that
is why people from the west buy in the south and east .love these things !!

I can't answer that question Ken. But yes, I bought an SOB in Pensacola
once, then after falling in love with the GMC I bought a gutted Avion in
Baton Rouge (better), then an Eleganza II in SoCal (See, I'm learning), yet
another Avion in SoCal and finally my beloved 23' Birchaven just two hours
South of me. Two hours? How easy was that?

Ken,

that way they can verify what works and what does not work mechanically
on them. At least to me, it was very promising that I was able to drive
2600mls without any kind of problem with my GMC bringing it from San
Diego to Virginia.

Congratulations Dave. Good that Jim B knows the coach. Mine came with a stack of service and repair invoices from another GMC service great one, Ken Frey in Quakertown PA. I had to travel all the way across the street to buy if from my next door neighbor. Some cross the sea, many cross the country, I crossed the street.

Welcome to the club.

After exposing folks to the GMC motorhome for 22 years, I find truly THIS
is what it is all about. There are so many factions and reasons people
mess with these machines and any vintage RV for that matter-- we don't have
a lock on this. I'm not kidding, it's the excitement of having and holding
close such a machine. It's just fun and there's no way around it. My son
John calls me an exhibitionist, I tell him I feel a part.

That coach holds particular import, I can now divulge this after the sale--
I didn't want to sway David G.'s decision to get it. This was the "last of
the Mohican" I knew of. It had been stored in an aircraft hanger for 15
years just after a round trip to Alaska--- didn't even wash off the clay!
The couple who owned it parked it in their hanger and immediately bought a
77 Palm Beach which I restored for them. They were the first couple in the
local club here to give me a chance. In 1997, I was the "young
whippersnapper" folks in the GMC community were not sure of after my
initial exposure of being # 2 in command of CLASCO. I was #1 in enthusiasm
and could not move on here I am, still here. My son's first single engine
airplane flight was in Carl's plane which he now is in charge of the
UAVflight simulator program at Embry-Riddle.

I have always wanted to support Carl E. mainly because he supported me.
Even though he has passed I still feel a tie to these machines. My
painter, Kevin, now owns the 26' Palm Beach. Chris G. bought this 23'
Birchaven, understood what it was going to take to bring the coach back to
the road for his family to enjoy. Finding it was too small for his growing
family the next owner will be able to complete the renovating of the coach
back to reliable use and has a true need and use for the coach. You can't
care anymore than to get a coach to someone who can appreciate it.

Don't know if it will work out, gotta see the weekends sport but I would
like to drive down and ride back with you. In that I will possible not see
the coach again, one last ride in an institution would be time well spent.
I'll be in touch David

Ken,

I guess that it is just a matter of if the coach is your personal right fit,
where it's from doesn't matter. ....and if you use it for years and years
having fun along the way then that original pick up distance doesn't really
matter. Right?

just my 2 cents(US)..... Cool

That's correct. Publicly available CL search engines re-use the results of Google, Bing, etc. My own tests came up with an approximate loss rate in the 20-25% range. Only rely on these 3rd-party sites if you are comfortable with being late to view the item sought and only finding 80% of them.

Why are the results so poor? Craigslist actively pursues and sues websites which "help" search it
directly --even free sites. See http://craigwatch.com/ for but one of many examples. (see the "Get the full scoop" link for details)

My own GMC search site was taken offline as it became apparent that CL was going after free sites as well as commercial ones.

Dave,

I've seen the 23' that you are buying. It's a nice coach. The only reason
they are selling it is they are a couple with two teenagers. They just need
a bigger coach with more interior space.

Yea, I cherish the coaches I work with in my own way. Hey Steve F., this
is the coach I had called you about a year or so before. I really am happy
it will be used. I hate to see a coach sitting-- like mine....

Can't make it, I have another coach coming in first thing Monday hey but
get a pic of you talking to me on the cell phone, afterall it is where I
would rather be...

Chris got most of the 101 I hit you with, the coach is well on the way with
what he did, you can pick right up where he left off. He had his fun now
you have the com and it's your turn. You gotta make it fun or it would be
way too much torture to endure for long! As you saw when you were here,
the initial price is only half the picture. Any coach you buy will need
"X" amount of stuff before you can call it road ready. There's just no way
around it.

Talked to a gal trying to buy a coach, I am convinced more than ever to
give as much input as you can get and know what you're getting into BEFORE
you take the plunge. I feel you and Chris both are doing all this for the
right reasons -- it's nuts I didn't put you guys together right away-- you
were interested in a 26' coach until you understood your options. I was
sitting in my office thinking about your quest-- bout fell out of the chair
when the 2 nerves connected and I thought of both of you. I had to put it
together in my head again because it was just such a fit-- that doesn;t
happen like that often. You may go retro on me and decide that harvest
gold interior and all might stick! Meno and Elsa would love it!

Hey but call me when you too get together,

Jim Bounds

Thanks Jim, Chris and I will call you.
As they say it isn’t over till the fat lady sings, and I won’t be in Fla to pick up the coach until the 22nd. I haven’t posted much about my joy in getting this coach, after it’s a done deal, then it’s time to celebrate!
Keeping my fingers crossed. :-)

Hey Dave,

Getting closer and just wanted to confirm everything is all planned up and ready to go.

Out of curiosity, do you want me to have some cooking implements available in the coach? What are your plans for meals? Stove, oven and fridge are good to go, so you could presumably cook your own meals if that's your plan. We usually travel with some stuff from our kitchen (pots, pans and cooking tools), but keep dishes and utensils in the coach all the time.

Chris
