Well, it looks like I need to replace the bearings on a rear wheel. I took a drive last week and discovered that the left rear wheel was hot, so I concluded that after sitting for a while that the brake caliper was probably rusted in position. So I cleaned it up and everything seemed to be working just fine until it went for another drive yesterday and heated up the same wheel. Ugh. So I figure I have to take it apart again and replace the bearings.

My question(s):

I replaced my drum brakes with the 6 wheel disc system several years ago. I can not for the life of me find the bearing information for this system so that I buy the correct bearings. While I would like to buy from JimK, I can not have the coach in front of my house for that long. Damn Home Owners Assoc. Since I have a NAPA and other auto parts stores nearby, I would like to buy locally more quickly. Do these happen to be the same bearings listed on the gmcmotorhome.info site? Our NAPA store does not have the TIMKIN bearings, but does of course carry the NAPA bearings and races.

Do these bearings follow the same isntallation procedure as the original front disc brakes, or does the tightening procedure follow the original drum brake procedure? i.e. tighten by hand, back off 1/2 turn then install cotter pin?

When you have the wheel off and go to remove the hub nut, the amount of torque required to remove it will answer the torque question. I imagine that since the hub is spindle mounted just as the original setup was that it will not require the same amount of torque as the front hubs.

Pull it apart and check the bearing for a number, should be stamped on the caged bearing, cross reference that number on Napa's website and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps.

No. The rear wheel bearings do not include a spacer that is ground to fit
that particular bearing set as the front bearings (Timken #23) do. Install
as you would any other cone bearing set, tighten while spinning wheel to
resistance, back off, reset to finger tight and pin. You might check the #
on the existing bearing.

Same as for the drum brakes. Assemble, torque nut to 25 - 30 ft lbs. Back
off 1/2 turn, then tighten with your fingers till you feel contact. If the
cotter pin lines up, put it in. If not back the nut up until it does. NO
TIGHTER.

Does not matter if the dis system is Harrison or our, we all use the same
hub.
Be sure and try to get a National brand seals as some will interfere with
the bearing and generate steel particulates into the grease.
It is almost impossible to keep up with which manufacture has the correct
one.
Dave Lenzi was the person that brought up this issue at the convention.

Thanks for all the information! I was able to reach AppliedGMC to ask about the bearings (I am sorry I didn't call them first, I didn't think they would be open on a Sunday.) I just came inside after getting the wheel off and it was the caliper again, NOT the bearings. The outer seal around the caliper is ruined so I either need to rebuild it, or install a new caliper. I am leaning toward a new caliper as I need to get the coach moved today.

I am off to NAPA to see if they have a matching replacement caliper.

Bob,
Sundays were here to do some special request for our customer and be ready
for the Monday calls.
Since we instigated the e mail notice that goes out when the order goes
out, we have cut down on our phone calls and rush in our office looking up
tracking #.
Since 90 % of our orders ship the same day, it becomes double work when
people want to ad to an existing order.
I know I would want that type of assistance, so we do it even if it takes
time on or part.

If you are down by only one out of six, I'd move the coach with one left off.

Thanks for the guidance. The status is:

My NAPA provider can get me a new caliper for $25. This was a no brainer and ordered it. I now have to wait until Tuesday morning to pick it up. I am still debating on whether or not I should buy one for the other side. Until then I had to find a way to cap off the exposed brake line so that I could stop the fluid from draining out and use the other five brakes. Much to my surprise, it turns out that Home Depot had a 1/4" flare threaded cap. It looks like a standard acorn nut, but is threaded for a flare fitting and fit perfectly. I think I will keep this in my spare parts box so that I can use it to block off a line while on the road..if the need arises.

When you replace the wheel and torque to reset the bearings, BE SURE to fully back the nut off and then finger tighten it only. Otherwise you run the chance of too much tension on the bearings leading to rapid failure and the potential loss of a wheel from your coach. Ask me how I know this Smile
