Will a double din radio fit in the dash of a GMC? I want to install a radio/GPS, and most good ones are double din and it looks like it could be problematic to install.

Even if you don't go in for the all-singing, all-dancing GPS touch screen unit like I did, a double DIN radio makes a good choice. The control layout on the current double-DINs is easier to see and sort out while driving.

be my travel companion. Lifetime worldwide maps. ON the phone, i.e. no
need for data connection, not even for a phone contract, if you don't
like the phone. If you do select it as your daily phone, you won't be
disappointed either.
I have had multiple different onboard GPS units, from little TomToms,
over Becker in-dash 1-din units, to the current big double DIN unit from
Volkswagen. The mobile with a screen suction device is much,much better
than any of the others. Another thing to factor in, are updates. On the
Nokia units, you get updates every now and then automatically, for all
the onboard units that I looked at, you'd have to buy a new CD/DVD every
year or so, to get up-to-date maps.
What especially like is the ability to setup favourites outside the car,
and the visibility of the unit is great as well.

Steve, that looks like a tight fit! I don't have the ability to do the work, and I wonder if I can find an installer that will. I have Kenwood double din stero/gps in two cars, and like the Garmin GPS programs, but they no longer make a single din with a flip out screen. Clarion makes one that gets great reviews and I may have to go that route.
Anyone have a single din with a flip out screen that they would recommend?

Peer, I tend to agree with you. I have an iPad and iPhone, both of which are very good navigators. But size and placement are a problem -- particularly with my old eyes. As I said, I have two cars with 7" in dash screens, and I find them very useful. I don't know about the flip out screen, but it sounds like the best of both worlds.

I can relate to that. Not on the navigational issue re size, but in
general re size and eyes. And yes, Apple has been on the forefront of
catering to younger folks when it comes to screenfont size. ;) I am
pretty sure, noone over the age of say 60 is able to see a difference
between a regular resolutioned screen and one of these high res screens.
If the 820's size is too small, check out the 1320. Same advantage of
having on-device navigation, while at the same time having an even
larger screen. My eyes have rapidly lost their eagleness, but the 820's
screen is big enough for me.
I do not like the flip-outs, as I tend to remove the display with my
knees... don't ask how often :)

Pioneer makes a single din high resolution flip out radio with GPS. It can be tethered with your I-phone GPS and it will mirror the radios' screen. You can also use it with a backup camera and it is blue tooth enabled. You can get it with GPS but the extra money they ask for the GPS is nuts.

I decided to go with the Clarion single din. I prefer Kenwood, but they no longer make a single din.

John's right, no flip out screens GPS by Kenwood. I like Kenwood because they use Garmin mapping and I have them in two cars. Now I get to learn a whole new system. 
BTW, never had a problem in years of service with Kenwood.

I kind of like the specs for the Jensen: 6v front rear and sub pre-outs, 95db s/n, 10 band eq., variable button color...
Not a bad spec sheet for a brand that hasn't paid much attention to specs for a while. Specs could be a sign of a comeback, or a work of fiction. For $340 I'm tempted.
Just need an 8-track and some Jenson 6x9's for the back deck and we would be talking vintage 1976... 
76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center...

I liked the Jensen, also, but talked with a tech at the best stereo shop around here, and he offered that Jensen was "junk" (his word). Now, that is one man's opinion, and I don't know how much weight I'd place on it. Also, they didn't sell Jensen products, for whatever the reason, and that may have factored in his opinion. In any event, may be worth checking out that thought.
He did recommend the Clarion, which he would have had to order, but I bought it from another source, who also recommended it, among a couple of choices. Pioneer was also highly recommended, but much more expensive.

As a retailer, the Clarion and Pioneer are safe recommendations. No mystery there. For the last thirty years or so, Jensen has been swirling around the bottom of the car audio bowl, and has disappeared once or twice. I only saw it in discount aisles of get rid of my junk department stores like Big-lots. Was a little surprised to see it recently as a tier one brand at the local Camping world...
I have always been a sucker for specs and the under appreciated brand, though. Crutchfield carries it, and they usually don't waste their time with junk. Time will tell.
