For no particular reason except that I just stumbled across this old album
and think someone might profit from it:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g4452-flare-fitting-repair-with-copper-seal.html

http://goo.gl/h3zxb

A friend recently replaced oil cooler lines here and couldn't stop one
fitting from leaking. Such a copper gasket from my parts bin corrected the
problem easily.

After I first posted that, someone pointed out that they're available
off-the-shelf, usually from air conditioning outfits. I no longer have
that reference. If anyone does, it might prove useful to someone.

Ken, you have been reading my mind again! Your post comes at a very appropriate time for me. I just installed new 3/8 inch transmission cooler lines that I purchased from Jim K. and the lower radiator fitting is still trying to leak. I tightened it until I was afraid I would break the fitting in the radiator. Bob Burkitt told me he thought you knew where to find the washers and if my leak continued I was going to ask you about them. Hopefully someone will know where to get them but I will also do some searching.

A/c parts places should have 1/4",3/8" and 1/2" probably not 5/16". A large plumbing or hardware store should be another source.

I think Jim has them.

But
http://www.gsistore.com/3-4-sae-b2-12-copper-flare-gasket.html for 3/4,
b2-4 for 1/4, b2-6 for 3/8, etc., ...

If need tham and you don't want to order a 0.20$ part, look up refrigeration equipment suppliers. They have bins of those things. Industrial refrigeration is all assembled with copper flares and they get garfed up so they won't go tight. Then you get an annealed copper flare gasket out of your little bag of tricks.

Matt - not a refrigeration guy for many years

Disturbed by the prices, I found this most economical source (note that
their sizing is a bit strange--subtract 1/8" for what we expect):

Speaking of copper. If you want a soft copper washer, anneal the washer first. Annealing copper is simply heating it cherry red and letting it cool (you can quench in water if you want). It will be dead soft and conform to small irregularities but age harden back to the original hardness.

I do a good bit of copper metal shaping and it is VERY difficult to shape without frequent annealing.

Gene,

It should be noted, however, that those HF washers are flat -- not
pre-flared. Will it matter? I'm not sure, but I feel better with the
added washer at least approximating the fitting profile.
