New windows from MotorHome Enhancements (Gene Dotson) have arrived. Really impressive units and about half the weight of the old windows. The only issue is that the poorly trained monkey that screwed the inner piece to the main extrusion should not have been given a screwdriver. Not only were there multiple holes drilled in the extrusion but the inner piece was poorly aligned. Nothing a drill wouldn't fix but irritating none the less.

The old windows came right out which probably explains why they leaked. My friend Beau came over to help. Took about 2 hours to do the door and big window.

Taking the interior out was a lot harder than changing the window. Which leads to question #1.

1- How did you finish out the window trim for those who have new windows.

On a slightly different subject, my cockpit side windows leak badly.

2- How do they come out and what is the best way to stop them from leaking. I'm going to get new parts from Applied but am thinking the gasket around the window is about as bad as the other windows were.

Btw, if you are using Capt Tolleys Creeping Crack Filler will leave a 'track' on your paint so don't put on so much that it runs off the window. Shocked

I had to invent a way to reuse the trim on my early 1976 Palm Beach. No one (including MotorHome Enhancements) that I contacted seemed to know how to reuse the trim that I had. I finally figured out a way and it looks good I think.

I don't know if the window trim changed from early '76 to '77. If your trim is like mine, I could send you a link to photos on how I did mine.

You will find installing the windows is easier with the double suction cup glass handler from Harbor Freight. Gives you something to hold onto, other than the edges of the window frame. I also used the suctionhandle to pull the window in tight to the coach body.
Yes, I agree that whomever, at the factory, installs the inner frame, needs re-training. This is over installing two complete sets, and several individual windows in other GMCs.

I can not get the pulley's alined right for the alternator. I had to change to move to the second pulley to get it close. It is still not square up like I'd to see. It is one pain to take out adjust the pulley and putt back in. I was supposed to leave tomorrow for 15 day trip. Looks like it is going to be one day late.

Checked out everything several days ago no problem except AC needed a little charge. Starting it up to charge the AC yesterday and the alternator is bad. When I got it bearings was bad so it is a good thing the alternator quit.

Art,

Are you saying you bought a new alternator and the pulley on the new one does not line up with the belt like the old alternator?

Do you still have the old alternator?

Art called me yesterday saying his Alternator was bad and he was supposed to leave Monday on a trip. The parts stores were telling him 5 days. I let him have the new spare I had and will replace it...5 days is no problem for me as the coach is up on blocks.

Apparently the new alternator has a different spacing.

Art, did you try using those spacers I gave you? Or take out the one that was behind the pulley? you old one has the pulley flush with the fan.

I wish I had heard about this before about 2:00 pm yesterday. The CFO took the boys to Decatur to buy clothes for school and I could have hitched a ride and helped for a few hours.

Is there a difference in the alternators between the 455 and the 403? Art's is a 455 and yours is a 403.

Back to the original subject, does anyone have any photos or is there a tech article on refurbing the cockpit side windows?

I tried the spacer you had installed. The belt alined part way between two pulleys on the power steering pump. I took out the spacer and then it would not line up to the pulley the other one did. I put the spacer back in and put washers in front of the mount to the alternator. It switch to the over pulley but is closer alinement. I quit working on it for a while to see if I could get it better since it is still off some.

I added washed to the bracket on the side of the head and it pushed the alternator forward to where the pulley line up. I am not sure if the pulley is twisted a little. I guess I will find out as I am going to start installing a new set of belts and get ready to leave for about 17hrs of driving to Oswego NY. I will find out on the trip if it is alined good enough.

Kerry,
There are only a few screws holding in the cockpit window. I ordered the C-channel seal from JimK. The cockpit window releases from the trailing edge first, and needs to slide back an inch to clear the front support. Mine were very stubborn, a heat gun was helpful, but slow steady pressure with a few plastic interior pry bars prevailed. I then dis assembled the windows, which are held together with a few sheet metal screws at the butt joints. The glass rubber seal was (luckily) still very pliable. I cleaned it well, and soaked it with silicon, let it dry. I applied clear acrylic caulk in a thin beads both sides of the rubber upon reassembly. Make sure you add the drains to the C channel fuzzy seal so it drains at the extrusion slots.
The window frame screws on my '73 didn't thread into the frame of the coach, but a thick aluminum backer plate that clamped the window to the coach frame. There was a cheesy plastic cover glued to it with window sealant to hide the gap. Butyl tape and a heat gun are your friend, pay close attention to the top front corner.
P.s. You may want to paint the coach's side windshield frame, there is a thin reveal when installed, painting it black to match updated the entire look. It was too cold when I did mine in November but have covered it with vinyl (electrical tape) for now.
