Rear bed renovation [message #256229]

Well, it finally appears that the unemployment in my house is ending. That means we now have the funding to do a few more things to the coach sooner than we had expected! It is amazing how a secured income makes things like an RV renovation possible.

One of the renovations we want to do is to convert the two twin beds in the back to a single bed (after 27 years my wife still wants to sleep in the same bed!) I am a woodworker and have no trouble with the basic structure, but do have a few questions about what others have done.

First, for those that have done this, have you tied the beds to the wall structurally, or is your bed freestanding and not screwed to the walls. If they are connected to the walls, did you use any special screws? It is my understanding that you wouldn't want to use steel screws in the aluminum frame or is that an old wive's tale?

Is there a prefered mattress foam?

What creative solutions have you come up with to take advantage of the storage space in the middle that is now covered by the bed?

Bob, My 29.5 ft. stretch has twin beds in back but, like you two, my bride of 43 yrs. still likes to snuggle. I simply applied a 1"x2"x4ft. slat (one on each side of the beds) and laid a 5/8" bridge between the two beds (recessed of course). My coach will handle a full king size mattress but yours will have to be a queen. (overall mattress measurement will revile what to buy). Your choice on mattresses.

I figured that something like that would be the first step.

Our Edgemonte (north-south twins) had a board section spanning twins with
matching foam. Same as Dan described. Installed by PO.

Foam 'mattresses' used for the twin beds is starting to sag. We will
shortly be removing it and the nightstand to install a platform and
permanent king bed (3 layer mem foam).

If you are near or over 6' tall, you might want to make the mod that I did after sleeping in the rear bed a few times:

I also replaced the POs inner spring mattress with a three piece foam one from Overstock.com. It is a 'full size' made up of two different density 3" foam pads with a 4" memory foam top pad. It is very comfortable. My wife keeps saying she wishes she could get the Sleep Number bed in the house adjusted to the same comfort level as the bed in the coach.
