Final Drive identification...and other questions [message #255953] |

After too long a delay due to circumstances beyond my control, I am back to working on the GMC!
As usual, I have a couple questions...
First, how can I identify which Final Drive has been installed in my transmission? Is there a way to tell from the outside?
I will be driving the coach from Virginia to and through the mountains in Colorado. I have been looking at installing the Fuel Injection add on sold by Jim K at Applied GMC. Does anyone have any experience with it? Are there other, recommended F.I. options that appear to be as easy to install as this unit?
I plan on replacing the brake lines with the Stainless Steel lines available from Jim K as well. Should I expect any issues installing these lines, or do they fit fairly well?

The stainless lines from applied fit my coach perfectly and were exact when compared to the old lines as far as length and bend location.
I don't think you can tell which ratio other than if you count the bolts in the final drive cover. a stock or re geared stock 307 will have 10 and the 321 has less. Eight I think.

We are the only one that stamp the ratio on the milled face where the cover
mates.
It should be mrked MH 355, MH 370.
Sometimesthe shop that does the work for us will take short cut and stamp
35/37.
Best way is to mount a tachometer and drive on a levelarea at 60-65mph and
record the RPM.You can then go toour site under Transmission/Final and
refer to the chart.\
Our EFI unit we push is the unit bsed on the Hoewll unit with the
distributor control with the Dynamic EFI unit in the computer.
There must be over 300-400 GMC owners running them.
We have at least 10 people that are very familier with the unit and can be
conta cted 24-7 shoul you neeed assistance.
Being an Automotive Jobber, w have full access and inventory other EFI
units.
The benifit of the Howelllunit is that it is comprised of GM components
that can be purchasedat any parts store.
Whenever we need parts for the others, we need to order from the factory as
no one wants to cary parts that ar not populer.

If your going to replace the brake lines, be sure to spray all the joints
with rust penitrator and use the Line Wrench.
Best to invest in a set of good ones.
Sometimes we will use a Vise grip and clamp down onthe head of the wrench
so it lessens a chance of sliping around.Also ue a nll steel hammer to act
like an impact tool and work it both ways to break the rusted joint.
Moat of ou know tat you can always call us for help on the phone.. I only
insist that when I start telling you what to do, shot up and listen.
If you dont' I do tell lor of our customers to shut the Fu -k up and listen
as we do these all the time and in constnt cotact with others that do the
same. hose that will not listen, I will need to et a 900 line and let them
pay us to rattle their issues.
No I am not drunk, just mouthing off.
Maybe I will get off here and have a drink.

The ratio of a final drive can be determined by checking the RPM of the engine at various speeds then referring to the chart below from Jim K's site.

Jim,
Thanks for the response! You have no worries about me listening. You were immensely helpful when I was installing the disc brakes so I learned to listen well!
Having been in the technical service industry for 25 years, I know when to listen to the experts. I just wish my clients did as well.
As soon as I get my purchase list together (and secured funding from SWMBO) I will give you a call.

I can tell you what kind of mechanics I have, they do not listen and do a
mediocre job and bl aims other things and not willing to hold them self
accountable.
Our guys on our Air Filter side can do a better job, but we need them there.
