I tell you what, brakes were awesome and the tires were quieter than I thought they would be.

Now if this thing wasn't all over the road. Scary uncontrollable.

I really have no choice but to send my steering box out. As I was coming around the corner back to my house I could hear something whining, the seal on the top of the steering box gave out and was puking whatever steering fluid was left out onto my driveway.

Got the oil and filter changed in the generator, got the front bumper off, brackets straightened out, and got the bumper back on.

Just glad the steering didn't give out on our way up to Baker Lake which is the first trip we have planned.

Jared

edit, emailed a message to Red-Head down in Seattle, just waiting for a quote.

Jared, take your existing steering box off, and take it to Redhead in
Seattle. Have them rebuild it. Do not try to purchase a rebuilt unit from a
local auto parts supplier. Just what I would do.

Also check to see if the filter in the PS line at the wiper motor has been removed. As the filter gets plugged it will blow the seal off the top of the steering gear.

There are two hoses connected to the bottom of the wiper motor. I believe the left(as you face the wiper motor) hose is were the filter would be if it still has one. It looks like a pipe about 2 inches long. Some people poke the guts out of the pipe or replace it with a regular pipe fitting. If it looks like it is still there, remove it and see if you can look through it--if not, the filter is still in there and probably causing a major restriction which will increase the line pressure and damage the top seal in the gear.

Jared,

Here are links to all the manuals for your 77 GMC that you can reference for simple problems like this:

1975 / 76 Maintenance Manual X-7525: http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7525/index.html

1976 Maintenance Manual Supplement: X-7625: http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7625/index.html

1977 / 78 Maintenance Manual Supplement X-7725: http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X7725/index.html

Parts Manual 78Z: http://www.bdub.net/manuals/parts/index.html

To answer your question see MM X-7525 / Section 1 - Body / Page 1-17 / Figure 27 & 28.

Thanks Bob, will take a look at it this weekend.

Heard back from Red-Head, they wanted a few pictures of my gear. I haven't removed it yet so I sent them 2 pictures of it installed and I borrowed the stock photo from Applied. Waiting to hear back.
