It is common for the converter to leak down, but when the trans stars o
spill out and hesitates befor engaging tells me tey are correct about
needing to tear it down.
I'm sure Manny will be able to explain wat causes that.

I found the problem with the trans. Turns out that it was the filter. I couldn't believe that the trans was bad. I researched the forum archives and found that Neil Martin had a similar problem last year. Seems that the aftermarket filters have questionable specs. When I dropped the pan, the filter had fallen out of the valve body. The one I had in my trans has too small of an input pipe diameter diameter and was also too long, the o ring would not seat. Turns out this is known problem, (http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=216648&rid=2177&srch=Transmission+Filter#msg_216648). No one chimed in with this possibility. Manny didn't suggest it when I talked with him and the filter was installed down at the COOP. I got a part number from one of Jim K's people, O'Relly's POWER TORGUE FK-117. It fit snug and stayed put in the valve body. That is what it supposed to do. I re-installed the pan, filled the trans with fluid and it ran and shifted as it should. Hasn't leaked a drop in a week. I really believe in this FORUM and if you look hard enough you can find any information needed. This saved me a Transmission swap. Thank you Neil for posting your experience. Beware!!!!
If I can't fix it, no one will be able too.

Thought you might be interested in something the late, great Bob Drewes posted a couple of years back:
Fella's;
As JimK says, these filters are all over the place for dimensions. The filter neck that goes into the tranny needs to be right at 3/4" (.750") for the O ring to seal. Mic the tube, don't use the filter if it is even just a little smaller, it will not seal. Another thing to watch, the O rings that come with the filter, even the correct filter, are of poor quality and size, especially the body width. The O ring is a #116 O ring, which has the spec's of 3/32" width, ID 3/4", OD 15/16", actual size will be ID 0.737", OD 0.943". Go to a good hydraulics place and get a full bodied O ring, you will see the difference. I purchase them at my local JD dealer. If you have the correct O ring, no need for two O rings, they may even combat each other, or will buckle up when inserted in the tranny port.
The Wix has a slightly longer pick-up tube than the AC TF-169, no problem with the OEM pan, but may need to be shortened slightly if using a Ragussa pan, because of the fins inside the Ragussa pan.
Take care from Bob Drewes in SESD

We have returned so many trans filters that the Wix rep called me, I
ripped into him and told him an earful.
At least our guys have been measuring all the filters.
Brand does not matter. Don't give me credit for giving a wrong # as wegave
you a correct one . if the installer does not know that it needs to fit
tight with the O ring, then I'm sorry.
All the trans filters that are produced in low volume are from Communism
China.
I hate parts from there, as we will be in a position to where they will
walk in and take over as we cannot manufacture much.
My defense to ou guys : I'm Japanese.

Tom,
Congratulations on the new coach. Good work on the transmission. I drove through Chesapeake last week in route to Outer Banks. I should have stopped. Could have seen the new coach. I am going to add a new trans filter to my parts list, along with all of these correct specs. I would rather source and test one now and keep it in My inventory than have to hunt for a good one when in a jam.
Thanks for posting.

You are completely and totally out of the water saying first I do not audit
this forum and that I have junk in stock. I use exclusevly the brand ATP,
the part number is B40. I have been using these for 17 years, used them
when I was at 2 other GMC specific dealers. You do not have a "junk"
filter from me. Look at something other.
If you still maintain that my filter are junk, I will need to see the
evidence. Carefull disparaging a dealer unless you are very, very sure. I
am always open for input, I have suggested folks use this ATP brand B40
filter for yours. There may be an issue, you should give the person the
credit to call them before you say something like that! I see no problems
with them. In fact, I will order in one of the kits you say is better,
I'll let you know what I find

Jim K states that its not any one brand of filter. The QA on all the brands is suspect. I think the point is to be aware of the issue and to recognize an incorrect fit. I will send the filter back to you so you can see it.

Jim Bounds Slow down there neighbor. Nobody said you don't audit this forum. I said you don't spend much time here, which is fine because you have other stuff to do. And I wasn't disparaging anybody or anything. I was trying to make sure you maintain your reputation of quality work and parts. Take the advice and check your stock, or not. Your choice.

Perhaps, what Jim Bounds was steamed about was the fact that was that he
was not given an opportunity to resolve your perceived issue about the
transmission oil filter person to person, instead of getting "put on front
page" on the GMCnet. If that had been the case with me and an issue with a
customer, I would be somewhat resentful if I was not given an opportunity
to correct an issue first hand. Can't make things right if the opportunity
is not brought to our attention, first person to first person. Then if
satisfaction isn't given, perhaps it might escalate into a bigger theater.
Never know until you try. I am not being critical of any single person
here, please do not take it that way.

Well brother you made your point, sorta like you did when I was here
complaining to me about the POS you bought thinking a dealer would sell you
a cream puff cheap! You had me go look at it to verify what the seller
said about the coach. We did that, wasn;t my fault the rst of the coach
was falling apart around it's ears! Yea, it's a twin bed but that basket
of bolts will in the end cost you plenty. There is no $2500 coach worth
it's salt unless someone just gives it away and the person you got that
from which will remain unmentioned has been in this business longer than me
and friend, "You ain't gitten a deal from him!"
So yes, I take things personal, some say I should just let it go but I have
worked too long for some crap to hit me in the face. Yes, there are a
couple of issues I would really love to expound on but those things would
go no where other than making me feel better so I'll leave those along--
that is unless I hear anything about them again. This one is a simple fact
of you saying I did something to you when I did not. My "stock" is not sub
quality in fact ATP has been building parts like this for a very long time,
their stuff costs more but I don't care, I want American made if I can get
it and the best part I can find. There are too many "as good as" parts out
there with varying degrees of quality.
I took part of my day today to investigate the claims of your mechanic who
told you a cheap China part is made better than the quality American made
one. I posted all my finding over on my daily pose, go have a look.
You get what you pay for and trying to make a silt purse from a sous ear
usually ends up with a cluster &^%#. If you point a gun at me you had
better use it...
