I thought of going this way too... How long does it take to get cold? IF you run it by inverter, how big of an inverter do you need? Where is a good place to buy a reliable one?

Fred,
$75 is definitely high. Maybe it includes setup and hauling away the old one? I'd check to see if Home Depot, or Lowe's, etc have a rental truck available. It would probably be cheaper.
On a totally unrelated note, did anyone notice a typo in the Amazon listing? It says the dimensions are "26 H x 21.5 W x 23 D". It's the refrig-a-tardis -- bigger inside than outside!

Two questions: have you posted any pictures of your installation, and what kind of inverter are you using (what brand, it it pure sine wave, modified sine wave, etc.)?

Fred,
Like you, I'm looking for a new fridge, so I looked deeper at this Avanti unit. I noticed this on the factory page: "Free standing installation only. Proper ventilation is required to maintain satisfactory cooling and overall performance. See owner's manual for proper installation requirements." Of course, installing it in a GMC would constitute "proper ventilation" if the roof and side vents were still in place, but I wouldn't expect them to honor the warranty.
There are electric-only refrigerators made for RVs. They are usually listed as marine refrigerators and sell in the $1,500 range. Examples are the Dometic TJ85AC, the Norcold DE-0061, the Vitrifrigo DP2600i, and the Nova Kool RFU9000 (9 cubic feet!). All will fit in the GMC's cavity. The downside is the higher cost, but you don't need an inverter to run them, they are designed and warrantied for RV use, and supposedly the Danfoss compressor has a "soft-start" that doesn't put as much strain on the electrical system.
I haven't used any of these so I don't know if these claims are true.

The Vitrifrigo runs on either 12 or 24 Volts DC, automatic selection. For AC operation, it runs a converter down to the 24V DC to provide more efficient operation. I have one sitting in the garage that I had on a 35' Carver boat that got destroyed in an ice-storm caused marina collapse. It currently is used for additional home freezer capacity. Temp in freezer runs between -5 to + 4 degrees F. It may end up in the GMC if/when I get a new motor in the coach.

I tried to fight the delivery charge and wanted to pick it up but they refused. I think they are shipping it in from up north and want their shipping covered.

With either HD or Lowes, it all depends on who you get to talk to.
Ada and I went to HD last week and bought a 4.5 CF VISSANI refrigerator
for her son. It is basically a oversize dorm unit. Told them to hold it
until we got back to the beach. Even put our name on the unit to hold it.
When we picked it up Wed. it was in an opened box. Manager said it was a return
and they didn't have anymore. Asked him why they sold the new one out from under
us that had our name on it. No answer, but said the guy who returned this one
bought it for his RV and when he saw that they wouldn't warrant it for that application
returned it. I told him that I had paid for a new one not used. He agreed to take $50
off the price (plus the military discount) and if we had any problems that we could
return it no questions asked. He helped us load it on our pickup and so far all is well.
