Measured the fresh water and black tank capacities. Both are new tanks.

water - 32 gal
black - 20 gal

Looks like I can't count on running out of water before the black tank fills up. Good thing the new tank sensors are accurate. On both, for all practical purposes, F is full and E is empty. Good thing I got the Thermosan working.

In the course of this testing I got to see the water come up out of the floor drain. Good thing the system is, so far, new and unused. I sure don't want to see that happen after it has been "in service".

Wow, have to keep an eye on the black water tank for sure. I thought that fresh water and black water tanks were same size as original? So since these are new is that why the difference? I don't think my gauges are connected, PO said prior to him a fresh water tank repair was done and hole for sending unit was plugged..I see a yellow and another wire hanging in the fresh water tank rear against the RR taillight area hanging and not connected to anything..PO said he thought they were for the sending unit. Also said that black tank sending unit did not work..so have to inspect that..fun..Glenn

Based on what I saw when I pulled the black tank, if yours is original, I wouldn't bother to fuss with the sender. Yellow is the sender wire with a White for the connection to ground.

Maybe to be safe you need to put in a 20 gallon fresh water tank. Does the thermasan system have all the controls working? You have to get to a certain speed before it can engage and so on?

The original Thermosan system used a speed sensor switch (approx 35 mph) and a vacuum switch (don't recall the setting). Between the two of them it was assumed the engine was working hard enough that the exhaust system was hot enough to do the job (again the value is lost to CRS but it is in the books). Those parts are unavailable or expensive. For about $50 I put a temperature sensing system in the exhaust that will start the Thermosan when the exhaust is hot enough. Thus I'm doing it with a direct reading rather than than using indirect methods.

On page 108 of the 1976 Operating Manual that I have, it states:

Living Area Water Tank . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 Gal
Holding Tank . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . .32 Gal

I know for a fact that the fresh water tank holds more than the black tank, because once I was taking my neighbor up to Cinnabar to pick up his newly re-engined GMC. I had an empty black tank and full fresh water tank. He used the facilities and neglected to turn off the water faucet and pump. By the time we got to Sandusky, the bathroom had a couple of inches of water sloshing around and you could tell the pump was pumping air (empty fresh water tank). So is is possible to overfill the black tank by quite a bit from the contents of the fresh water tank. Advice to the contrary, may be misleading.

I had deleted the original email but if I recall the signature line said it was a Transmode. So you cannot go by what it says in the GMC Operating Manual. It all depends on what the builder installed.

It actually doesn't make much difference what it should be. I've gotta work with what I've got. At least the tank gauges show what is going on.

I did a draw down test on the water tank. 20 gallons out is 1/2 on the gauge.

I'll have to take a look at the black tank and make sure I haven't distorted it somehow when I installed it (I.E. clamped it up too tight.)

The 40 gallon size stated in the op manual sounds like marketing think or, perhaps, original desired capacity that has now been adjusted to match the realities of production and the real world.

Both new tanks visually matched the sizes of the originals and measured about the same and fit with no problems.

G'day,

Glenn W Topeka, KS 1974 GMC 26 ft. Desert Sand Side Bath

That's the signature line and so I checked the 1974 Operators Manual.

Having said that I have NO idea what a Desert Sand model is or who made it! :-)

Glenn you need to clarify that.

Avions (26' & 23') have 36 gallon fresh water tanks and 40 gallon holding tanks! Guess they were smart enough to realize they'd have
some dumb owners! Self included - I overfilled the black tank hooked to city water once. The operative word in the previous sentence
is ONCE! I may be dumb but I ain't STUPID! ;-)

There was a Painted Desert model in 1974 but I also have never heard of a Desert Sand.

Rob,

Id like to know how to achieve that 40 gal capacity from the oem tank. I had mine down to repair it, plugged the in and out holes, put a little air it and heated the top to remove the bowl dip shape the tank had.

The best capacity I can get is 29 gal to the top of the tank. 30-1/2 gal to the shower floor.
Maybe 40 gal is to the top of the vents.

The water tank is 32 gal.

Hey all sorry for the confusion...as a newbie, I just put the color in for which one it is...It is a 26 footer...Nothing identifies what model it is that I can find, not even the plate in the glove box, I guess PO had it listed as Custom...that's what I was told when I added it to the GM Registry..But it is the standard model with no name...lol...If anyone has any idea where else to look for a name I'm game...Glenn

In 1974 there were 4 models. The interior code should be written on the glove box sticker along with actual build date. 690 Sequoia, 692 Painted Desert, 693 Glacier, 694 Canyon Land.

Adrien,

I can't help as both my GMC's are Avions which as the sales brochures of the day noted have 36 gallon fresh water tanks and 40
gallon waste water tanks (supposedly).

http://www.bdub.net/publications/Avion/Avion.htm

http://www.bdub.net/publications/Avion2/avion-int-261.htm

http://www.bdub.net/publications/Avion2/avion-int-231.htm

This thread has piqued my interest and I'm going to measure how much goes into the fresh water tank using 5 gallon H20 dispenser
bottles.

Then I'll turn on the pump and transfer it into the holding tank and see how much more I can add.

Ok,mine says Model #ZE-06581, Base 160, Manufactured 12/10/1973, Color Camel. Doesn't say anywhere the interior code or anything with a different model number. Looking at the brochures my interior is the Canyon Land, can't find the exact floor plan as mine has the Double Passenger Seat in it, and originally had the two chairs on the Driver side but one of the POs replaced with a couch. Adrien,

I can't help as both my GMC's are Avions which as the sales brochures of the day noted have 36 gallon fresh water tanks and 40
gallon waste water tanks (supposedly).

This thread has piqued my interest and I'm going to measure how much goes into the fresh water tank using 5 gallon H20 dispenser
bottles.

Then I'll turn on the pump and transfer it into the holding tank and see how much more I can add.

Rob,

Id like to know how to achieve that 40 gal capacity from the oem tank. I had mine down to repair it, plugged the in and out holes,
put a little air it and heated the top to remove the bowl dip shape the tank had.

The best capacity I can get is 29 gal to the top of the tank. 30-1/2 gal to the shower floor.

Maybe 40 gal is to the top of the vents.

The water tank is 32 gal.

FWIW

In reading this brochure http://bdub.net/publications/1974_GMC_Motorhome/1974_GMC_Motorhome_Offerings17.html on page 6 it states that the fresh water tank is 40 gallon polyethylene tank, 6 gallon hot water heater and Disposal: 32 gallon polyethylene tank. So if my math is correct I could have 46 gallons of fresh water on board and only a 32 gallon black tank. Is that really a 40 gallon tank in there? Glenn
