Do you carry a grease gun on your GMC? Why or why not? If you do where do you keep it and how do you keep it from oozing oil all over the place?
The reason I ask: When we bought the GMC from the PO's estate his SIL stated that he greased the rear suspension at the start of each day. Correspondence between the PPO and PO indicated the PPO did the same. Our's has the 1-1/4" pins with no detectable wear. Therefore I'm inclined to continue this practice.

I wonder if he counted every step back and forth and every pump of the lever? Seriously, that's one of the strangests behaviours I've heard for a long time.

I think it isn't as bad if you relieve the spring pressure by pulling the plunger out and "cocking" it a little to the side. (Just tried it with the new Synpower, too early to tell.) But now you have a grease gun assembly about twice as long. I bet someone on the forum has a better solution. Maybe the fellow who used his every day didn't have a mess.
I read about a guy who changed all his fluids in his 57 Chevrolet every three months. Differential included, brake fluid. He said he had few problems.
To each his own.

I keep mine home in the shop and I grease the bogies once in the fall and once in the spring and do the rest at the same time. No mess, no fuss. JWID

Keep mine in a flannel bag under the propane tank so I can grease the boogies on an extended trip . Always good to have a little grease for whatever.

Steve,
I carry two grease guns in Double Trouble. I prefer the pistol grip type because you can operate it with one hand and hold the hose
nipple on the zerk if necessary whereas the lever type takes two hands to operate. I realize you can generate more pressure with the
lever type but if that's necessary you could have something wrong with the zerk.
Now people with good memories are going to ask; "why does this guy carry two grease guns when CONSTANTLY recommends to use only
grease with moly in it, specifically Valvoline Synpower?" The reason is Dave Lenzi supplies hubs and knuckles with Mobil 1 in them
and while it and Valvoline Synpower are compatible I am loathe to find out by replacing it with the Synpower.
As far as storing them they are in a place that doesn't exist in your GMC, I have a hatch in the aisle between the dinette and the
love seat that opens into the ski storage area in the Avion. As far as oozing grease goes they are wrapped in red rags and in Hefty
Jumbo 2 1/2 Gallon One Zip bags.
As far as greasing the bogies daily goes I reckon that's a bit over the top, especially if you use Synpower or another grease with
Moly in it such as Caterpillar Gold.

Rob M.

Thanks all for the input. It will fit under the LPG tank and I'll put it in a tray to catch the ooze.

I don't carry one with me, as I generally take pretty short trips. But, if you have raised the propane tank a couple of inches for storage, I'm thinking a big tupperware container with a grease gun inside it ought to fit under there and maybe contain the mess. I have transported them in my suv before, inside of a trash bag to work on other people's stuff, and it is always a disaster, doing it that way. Or, if you are doing the bag thing, having a rubber band or something to keep the handle from moving might help. Rob's pistol grip gun probably helps as well.

Regardless if you carry one or not, keep it in a plastic shoebox tote with a few layers of paper towels at the bottom.

Unless you are a full timer, all of this just seems way over the top to me. What in the world would you ever need to grease that you couldn't have done 6 months ago??

I don't carry one. Greasing Bogies is good.
As far as ooze, I keep mine under my work bench, laying on a chicken feed sack (more or less plasticized these days) and when I pick it up it is laying in a pool of ooze. Wiping it down is a slime city job.

Bob,
We are both old enough to remember that vehicles used to require lube service every 3Kmi. As we did just about 11Kmi last year and are planning for more this year, I plan to stick with it.
I do grease the rear every 1Kmi because it is poorly sealed. My pistol grip that I have for the front does not do that well as it is difficult to do and take more to push clear. but the pistol grip with flexible snout is great for the front.
Why do I over grease with 7$ a tube grease?
Because it is still cheaper and easier that buying and changing parts.
