Sammy,

You get the prize. Next guy who gets paid to haul one away will get it next. Can't beat zero. You can still get hurt, as you know, but most of the rest of us pay for that privilege. Congratulations!

Finally!! Now the actual education begins. Have you ever won a live
goldfish at a carnival? By the time you buy the tank, pump, fish food, ick
stop, etc. that gold fish is no longer free. Same for GMC's. Welcome aboard
any how.

I'll get a TZE when I get there to fire it up to drive it out. Was told it
runs, just needs jumping. We'll see. As stated, not the education and "fun"
begins.

If it has been sitting for a long time you might want to take a 5 gallon can of fresh fuel and some fuel hose to avoid bad fuel in the tanks that will really mess things up right away.

(Im using the email side so here goes...) Its squatting in the rear, but I

Uh, that isn't "squatting", that's "grounded". You may want to pick up some schrader fittings and a small compressor. If the onboard air system is dead or leaking, you can at least air up the bags and get the old girl's butt up off the ground.

Sammy,

So far so good!. Looks better than our second GMC did when I brought it home for $8000.

You will have a great time getting it to be just the way you want it.

Sammy,

I'm guessing a 1974 Painted Desert. Who else can guess? Can it even be done from a picture? Looks like the stripes at least have been replaced. Loads of potential. I am a fan of stronger, halogen 7" headlights if the headlights aren't adequate, losing those auxiliary lights. At least you don't have air horns on the roof! But, as a period piece, both accessories belong.

Wonder why horns aren't more popular any more. Used to hear "Dixie" played over and over. "La Cucaracha" also had a time of popularity.

Good luck. It was good advice about the spare gas can, I'll bet. Drive slowly on those tires, or get to a Firestone (to buy some of their Transforce 16.5" tires) before going home any distance. Make sure they are aired up. but hide your face from the tire as you air them up. If you see sidewall cracks in a circular direction, it's getting ready to let go. I see someone has your spare, unless it is inside. At the very least, air up that spare before you take off and locate the jack and tire tool. I apologize if this stuff is elementary to you. I am so glad you found a coach. Didn't you have a Cadillac 500 in your garage, Sammy?

This is the edited part: Looking at that door latch with the big stainless plate, Bill and Sean were right. It has to be a 1973 because that plate was needed to put the replacement latch on the door. Story was that some GM executive wives were taken to a big fancy function in an early production GMC. They got locked inside, the latch malfunctioned. It wasn't any time at all that top management replaced all the production latches with those we are familiar with, but it required a stainless steel escutcheon that you can see in the picture. So, early production 1973. Note also that I saw the horns mounted over the passenger side at the front later. It's really a period piece.

Second edit: Sammy, note the lack of rear view mirrors on the sides of the coach. Wouldn't care to drive any distance at all without them. Maybe they are inside the coach. Something to think about.

Best,

Carey

Sammy,

Just located those air horns on the passenger side roof! It does look like a period restoration. One thing seems certain and that is that the front ride height is either right or not far wrong.

If there is no reefer vent, does that mean the fridge does not operate on gas? Mine is a 73, but it has the vent, so now I'm wondering if it was added later because the fridge has been replaced.

Bill Bryant can tell the story better...the vent was "forgotten" on the early models which also were AC/DC refrigerators. There was a recall...actually for some it was a house call, if I remember correctly, the GMC techs would arrange to visit the owner and install the refrigerator vent wherever the coach was. I had to install my side vent (as well as roof vent) in order to add my propane fridge. Got my parts from JimK
