Hi all, need to find out what Oil Filters will fit my 455 engine, will go with the larger one. Have been reading but would like some of the latest info. I saw where there is WIX, NAPA...but need to know what numbers. Also what type and weight of oil is everyone using as I heard you need the zinc in the oil for the Cams...any help is appreciated, want to do it right the first time...Thanks for all your help, Glenn

I use a Wix 51258: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/gmc-chemicals-and-tools/p28711-oil-filter-wix.html I use Valvoline VR-1 20W50 oil. It supposedly has the proper amount of ZDDP in it. Some will say this oil is too heavy, but I live in the desert Southwest where temps and operating conditions are extreme, and my coach has the original engine in it with 88,000 miles on it. I figure it is a little bit 'loose' and benefits from the higher viscosity oil. Jim Bounds also recommends the VR-1 oil.

Wix filters are considered one of the better ones. Mobil One filters receive good ratings as well. Mobil One 15w50 synthetic has levels ZDDP recommended for our engines.

I think the PO said he used Rotella 30 weight and an additive for the zinc. If the Rotella has it already then I don't think I will use an additive. My engine only has a little over 43,000 original miles on it. It has had less than 100 miles on it in the last 19 years. Since I am in the midwest 30 weight should be good. Thanks, Glenn

Glenn,

On my low mile engine I use Wix 51478 and Rotella T 15-40, I also add 4 oz of ZDDP just for insurance.

Your engine may have enough miles on it where added ZDDP may not be required, not sure at what miles is OK.

It's really impossible for any of us to have conclusive information other than feel good judgement (which is fine). My engine was new (not rebuilt) about 65k miles ago. I have run synthetic, dino, single viscosity, and multi viscosity oils. I am totally indifferent to ZDDP. Sometimes I have felt that straight 30 dino oil was smooth and quiet but in reality I suspect that had no foundation. My engine burns no oil. So if it blows up tomorrow or 50k miles from now, I will have no foundation to make any conclusions. I suspect almost all of us are in the same situation. It takes millions of miles under controlled conditions to know for sure. I still think that American Marketing genious has determined our actions rather than pure facts. I bet some of us drive miles to find a certain filter or mixture of oil and it only affects our "lack of guilt"--which is probably OK too Smile

Well I think adding ZDDP looks to be more harmful than just sticking with what is already in the oil according to statements and results in the testing. So any good quality oil that contains ZDDP should be fine. I would rather get the oil with the ZDDP than take a chance that it isn't needed. So after I get fuel to my engine then I will change the oil and filter prior to starting and should be good to go. I mainly needed to have a good filter reference and some added info on the oil that is being used. Thanks, Glenn

I think you are absolutely correct, Bob. Although I stated my preference earlier in this thread, I really have no scientific basis for this preference. Just superstition, I guess. This morning I received the following from Steve Ferguson in my email box. It is a report from Blackstone Labs that verifies Bob's opinion on this subject:

Here's the pertinent part:

"Even
though I know from working here that my choice in oil was inconsequential (as long as there's oil in my
engine, it'll be fine)..."

Don't be so lazy and read it for yourself. Laughing
