July 1 is Canada Day. Fete du Canada. What friends we have up there. I will never forget the Canadians who smuggled out our embassy employees from Iran in 1980. Great personal and national risk to help friends down south. To say nothing of Dieppe, Lord Beaverbrook, Vimy Ridge. Something about Canadians who know how to be true friends. Enjoy your day. I won't forget. Thank you.

Best,

Carey from Ennis, Texas 78 Royale, 500 Cadillac, Rance Baxter EFI.

I know I am going to sound like an A$$hole saying this, but I live in Northwestern Washington. The Canasians as we all call them, they are the Asians that have migrated to Canada.

They come down here, flood our malls, fill the empty suitcases they brought with them with whatever merchandise they bought here, Throw the boxes and receipts in the dumpster, and then go back across the border without paying taxes. And they don't pay any sales tax while they are here.

Be lucky you live in Texas, if you lived up here and saw them doing 90 in a 70mph zone weaving in and out of traffic you may have a different opinion.

To the true French Canadians, Happy Canada Day. To the rest of you, go home.

If that is the way you took it, as a "Racist" comment, that is fine and that is certainly your perogative. I am certainly not "Racist".

The fact being that they do not float a boat across the ocean, clean out your stores while at the same time not supporting your economy I don't think you have much to complain about. I have lived here for years, I am pretty sure you have never met a Canadian that has driven into your country.

You wanna call ME a racist, that is fine.

Although I believe if you were in my shoes, or my wifes since she works at an Indian Casino and has to deal with them all day you would feel very different.

I am not a Racist, I profile.

Jared

EDIT, P.S, it is really easy for someone who lives on an island that won't let anyone else stay there for more than 6 months at a time if they weren't born there to call someone a Racist.

Come live in the States for a few years and we will see if your opinion changes.

You are missing the point Homer, whether you are French Canadian, or Asian Canadian, you do not pay sales tax at any of the stores in my state (Washington), which is right on the border. And that is great if you are helping out a Wal-Mart, Cabelas, Nike, Oakley, or any of the other stores in the Seattle premium outlet mall, which I will add, none of those are local stores.

If the sales tax is not being paid it does not help the county those items are being purchased in. It helps the store.... doesn't help the state, or the county.

Why is there no sales tax on the items that they buy? Sales taxes are a state and local thing. You must have put that exception into your state laws to encourage Canadian residents to shop in Washington.

I have done the same thing in reverse many times. I buy things in Canada and get my VAT refunded at the border. Why? Because Canada decided that they wanted my business and when the exchange rate is favorable I take advantage of it. My last set of new Michelin tires were purchased in Alberta (no provincial tax) and the federal sales tax was refunded at the border.

You decided to pick on Rob Mueller who is a native US Citizen and served is the US military. He chooses to live in both the US and Australia. So know of whom you speak. Oh yes, he is also an Australian citizen and could stay in either country full time if he desired.

I am a native US citizen and have traveled extensively throughout western and central Canada. Any province or territory Ontario and west(or north) and I have been there multiple times. I have always been treated warmly, by every Canadian I have met no matter what their ethnic heritage is. That includes, English, Irish, French, Chinese, Native North Americans, and one family that I know from Sri Lanka living in Winnipeg.

So, if you do not appreciate their dollars flowing into your economy, petition your State Government to change the tax laws and eliminate the jobs those businesses provide.

There is absolutely no GMC content here, so I'm with Rob and will not comment farther on this topic.

I have to weigh in on this one. I spend most of my holidays in the USA. I am always treated well, as I treat Americans visiting here. My wife is an ex-pat as were my paternal grandparents. Many Canadians have familial links to the US and for many of us the line on a map is just that. Happy Independence Day to all my American friends. Marcia and I will be observing our usual tradition of sitting in our sunroom with a glass of wine and watching the fireworks from Port Angeles to Roche Cove. Who pays for all that ordinance?

That is just left over stuff from WWII. I actually have about 200 rounds of 30 caliber carbine that was repackaged at Springfield Arsenal before I was born and I'm 70. We tried to get rid of it in Korea, Viet Nam, Kuwait, Iraq, Grenada, etc., but there is still some of it around to be shot off. I was a supply Sargent in Korea in 1966 and some of the stuff we had in our ammunition bunker was dated 1952.

Of course I am just joking. Various people, organizations, and municipalities pay for it. It is not cheap.

I am surprised that you can see it 20 miles away in Victoria. That stuff does not go off very high. I have flown around on the 4th watching it from the air and it is not very impressive. It is shot off very low.

Jared please get your facts right here is a quote from your state revenue office
" Sales tax exemptions on sales of vehicles and trailers, watercraft, and farm machinery or implements have different requirements. See the links at the bottom of this page for more information.

Effective April 1, 2013, British Columbia replaced its Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) with a provincial sales tax. This does not change the fact that British Columbia residents do not qualify for the nonresident sales tax exemption when shopping in Washington State.

The Department advises retailers to direct British Columbia residents to http://dor.wa.gov/Nonresidents for an explanation of the nonresident exemption. Retailers that provide the exemption are liable for any uncollected sales tax if audited."

Jared, you certainly touched a nerve with that post..... playing about with old rolling stock and the people who mess with it might not be the best place for political rants. I grew up in rural Alabama the 1950s. My outlook has changed considerably over the years. Yours may as well. I counsel sticking around but at a somewhat lower profile till things settle just a bit.

NOTE - advice is worth what you pay for it, and mine's free.

Jared,

I just drove in Dallas day before yesterday. I was cut off on the freeway by an apparently Caucasian man driving his BMW X5 at 75 in a 60 in order to get to the off ramp he had chosen. He made a gesture to me indicating that the problem was that I wasn't driving 75 myself. A good percentage of drivers seemed to me to be running from something on that freeway. I guess a monster was stalking us from behind.

I think you could look at those Chinese Canadians as people who have never experienced such low prices in their lives, so they are in a kind of a feeding frenzy. I agree, it ain't pretty. When I married my Chinese wife, I remember taking her to Walmart and watched her shop for three hours before she checked out finally. Spent $18. She got better at shopping as time went on. but the low prices just blew her away. It took a while for her to adjust. Things are expensive in China. I still got the better "deal", by far, by marrying her. When I married her, I quit gambling. That's because I saw loads of Asians gambling whenever I went to Vegas. Why ask for trouble? They haven't driven much of their lives, either, more so they are older. Please give them time to adjust to our society. In the next war, they will give their children to fight and die for us, I just know. Actually, they are already doing so. Look at the Japanese. In World War II, they gave their children to fight for our country, against genocide, against slavery and "mercy killing", even while they were in those camps and had lost their freedom. Does that not touch your heart? Medal of Honor winners among them.

What you see on a daily basis is the result of the immigration bringing in more and more fresh immigrants and visitors, so you don't notice the more experienced Chinese, they aren't as visible.

This avoiding taxes by ditching the receipts, that's their choice. I bet the penalties are pretty stiff. The Canadians can speak to whether this is a common thing. And if only the Chinese Canadians do it.

I have a policy I don't always follow. I do not have the right to be angry at someone on the road if they did something I have done myself in my life. Thanks to the guardian angels, I have lived through my teenage years. I don't often have the right to be angry driving, according to that policy. Actually, remembering my close calls makes me laugh instead. Being angry constantly might not be good for our health.

I see you have gotten caught in the border wars. It isn't nice being inconvenienced like you have been. When I went to Vietnam, I served with all kinds of races. Yankees. Puerto Ricans. Nicaraguans, other Hispanics, Geeches from South Carolina, West Virginians, African Americans, Native Americans, Germans, Filipinos, Vietnamese. No Canadians, though. People went to Canada those days to avoid Vietnam. I know you aren't racist in your heart. You are noticing things others notice and wonder about. In the six years of marriage, I have seen incredible changes in me and my wife. So the answer isn't to pretend not to notice but to notice and understand, even it it makes you grind your teeth.

Having said this, it just isn't acceptable to call another race out on this forum. You might find that advice helpful Mark Twain gave to us. "Better to be thought a fool and keep your mouth shut, than to open it and leave no doubt!" If I had followed that advice in my life, I would be much more successful. I am in the same boat with you, with many scars. Get over this one and keep on GMCing. If you need help and I can help, I will help. (This isn't likely that I can help, but I would sure like to. It has been very interesting how you are handling your GMC.) I hope I haven't offended you and pushed you farther into separating yourself from other human beings, now adding me to the bad guys. Hello Ken

When I said ordnance, it was a bit tongue in cheek. But the amount of fireworks that goes off has to be very expensive. I think a lot of Microsoft money goes into the San Juans. We can see them because we are on a hillside about 300 feet above the water. They are small from this distance but it is the ritual we observe because we can. Good optics help.

In the early 70's, I was an avalanche control tech in the Rogers Pass and the shells being used by the RCHA were surplus from the Korea war. Most dated 1952.

Thank you Carey, Rob, Guy, Ken, Fred, Roy, Johnny and to all of our Brothers on both side of this border.
For the last 150 years "we" have been Brothers, cousins, friends, allies. We have found wives and husbands, inter married, raised families, live, loved, celebrated and mourned TOGETHER. WE fought on the beaches of Normandy together, Korea, together, Afghanistan, together. Our two countries are committed to "working it out" in spite of borders, Governments or flags. We understand loyalty and friendship. We see the benefits and work toward common goals.
Canadians, like our American friends have reason to celebrate our national pride and heritage...the amazing thing is, how much we share together.
Canada Day...Independence Day...so much to celebrate and give thanks to God for.

When I still lived in Canada, my birthday was always a holiday--now I have to wait a few days Smile
