I am experiencing a smell from inside my coach and it hits me in the face when I open the door. When I go forward to the cockpit, the smell is less, likewise going back to the bed. The holding tank is fresh as a daisy. My kitchen trap is full. My shower trap is full. It is the smell of death and I have confirmed that it is NOT me. We use this coach and I would like to get rid of the smell. I have looked everywhere and hope to, very soon, utter those famous words "aha".

I have what I believe is that same odor, I'm thinking its likely suicide mice hidden behind the cabinets or in the walls. I've caught a mess of them but I think a few crawled into a corner and died.

I found mummified mice above the plastic ceiling panel in the hallway, the 73 had no foam there, just fibrous pad insulation they used for bedding.

This came up a short while ago and I mentioned my experience. The shower drain was leaking and I had water in the 'bowl' that seals the cutout in the floor below the shower trap. I understand some of the earlier coaches do not have this 'bowl' under there, but mine did and it had partially filled up with soapy water from the shower. That, combined with the accumulated dirt and grime under there, made for a very bad smell, kind of like sewer gas. You should be able to access this area by taking the removable toe kick off from below the shower door. Just my experience.

Also past experience with other campers is the sewer vent pipes going through the roof can become clogged either by wasp nests or dirt daubers easy to check with a piece of garden hose ran down through them and then run some water through there into the holding tank. Had a friend with this problem and it smelled terrible in the coach but once cleaned the sewer vents it took care of it...they were ready to sell the camper it smelled so bad...lol Glenn

I had the same thing several years ago and thought it might be a dead animal. However I later found that the drain for the kitchen sink went under the lower cabinet floor in the cabinet across from the bath module. It had a sink trap type of metal color that had corroded and come loose. Raw sewage was splashing up and that cabinet had sewage and toilet paper layered under it.
Here was my solution:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g3276-kitchen-sink-drain-to-holding-tank.html

I also found that was a good entry point for mice.

I then checked the other drain to the holding tank which is in the wall behind the toilet and accessible if you remove the water tank.
The pipe into the tank was loose and there was a large gap around the floor and the pipe which also allowed fumes and mice to enter.
Here is what I did there:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g4986-holding-tank-top-fitting.html

I had to trim off some from the down pipe so that it just fit into the rubber coupler. This kept fumes from coming into the GMC. I then fashioned some pieces of aluminum sheet around the pipe to cover the gap between the floor and pipe.

Those two things to take care of my mice in the motorhome problem.

Hey Larry you're just down the highway from me. We have friends that have cabins in Rockaway Beach and make it down that way every now and then. Good advice on where to look for problems and a mice entryway. I will be checking those areas out and making improvements. Thanks, Glenn

Can't tell you what it is or where it is, Larry, but if it's something
dead, leave the door open and wait for the flies to congregate. They'll
show you exactly where to look.

Had the exact same problem, took me 3 days to find the dead mouse right behind the toe kick panel in the cabinet under the fridge. I know traps are kinda gross when they work, but at least you know where they are. We had used the D-Con and it worked, but you don't know where they end up when they keel over. If I get any future invaders, I'll use the traps so I don't have to take the interior apart again!

Yeah dead mice can really stink. I got one that can beat that though. Somehow a racoon got into the transmode parts coach and couldn't find his way out. Found him about a week after he died. The transmode, a former mobile office, has no interior but that poor guy did one hellva job of clawing a lot of the foam off the walls. So where does a trapped, panicked dying racoon crap? EVERYWHERE.

So Steve just posted the solution for anyone that wants to remove that original foam insulation! No more scraping! If you can't get the raccoon, a possum might work... Laughing

Nope, not a 'possum; too dumb & lazy. Here's an extract from a note I just
sent to Roger Black about one I caught in a squirrel trap:

"Danged fool showed me all 52 teeth when I went to open the trap door.
Then, I guess he called himself playing 'possum 'cause he just sat there
for an hour or more. Maybe he didn't figure he had room to roll over on
his back. But he did eventually back up enough that his butt was out on
the ground. I drug the trap from around him and left him sitting outside
for 30 minutes or more before he figured out that I wasn't in the mood for
'possum barbeque that day. Dumber'ndirt."

Yep - maybe I should capture a new born kit and train it to remove the foam. However the residual discharge from the coon is definitely an impediment to this method.

Based on the amount of crap in the there I believe the critter may have been living in the transmode for some time before the problem. I walked by the transmode one day and noticed the propane door was open and closed and latched it. I suspect that was the death sentence. Its kinda ironic as the fella could have easily gotten out, I have the engine hatch out an replaced with framed window screen to help with ventilation. He could have easily clawed through that but there isn't a mark on it. The foam is clawed off all around the coach from the floor to about 12" up. Kinda sad. I'm not a big fan of raccoons near my structures but I don't like the thought of the suffering and panic.

I am really starting to think that this smell is from my carpet. Before our last trip in April, I rented a carpet cleaner from Lowes but noticed that the head would not SUCK due to a broken plastic plate. I did not think much of that and knew the carpet would dry before we were to leave. However, I really think that this is the residual soap and whatever that is fermenting in the carpet. Most can be removed and I am about to see if that makes a difference.

My coach lives indoors and there has been no "sign" of critter(s) living in there.

I don't think the mouse had much of an insulating factor. *smile*

I had a odor issue due to a snake that crawled into the hvac dash unit and
died. Really made a smell when the dash fans came on.

I had to take the cover off of the unit and remove the remains plus all
the maggots crawling around on the a/c evaporator.

Turn on the dash fans and smell what comes out.
