Any GMC'ers going? If so, and if weather allows me to fly my old airplane up there (1950), come and see me in the Vintage camping along the flightline, rows 83-87, four rows of Cessna 195's.

Larry,
I'd planned to take the grandsons, who missed out on the promised trip year
before last because of GMC problems. Unfortunately, the elder one got
mixed up with a gov't bureaucracy in trying to do an Eagle Scout project.
That delay won't let him get away in time for Oshkosh. :-(
Have fun for us too.

Larry,
No, unfortunately, we won't get to see you until Sept. I think it's
especially important for him to get the Eagle rating because he's trying to
get into the Air Force Academy and that will be an important plus for his
curriculum vitae.

Ken,
Glad your grandson is going for his Eagle project. Particularly proud that he wants to attend the Air Force Academy. A shout out to Gregg Popovich, coach of the NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs, who got his collegiate start at the Air Force Academy under Hank Egan. I wonder if Gregg is any relation to Dan Gregg???

Larry and all,
I plan on GMC'ing there, probably arrive at Camp Schoeller late Sunday afternoon and stay through the following Sunday (or Monday if they let me.) Beige 1977 Kingsley with tired paint and GMCBUS license plates. Feel free to stop by. I'll have a couple house guests off and on through the week.

Air show sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I could be there. I don't mean to hijack the thread with Eagle Scout stuff but... Ken, congratulations on your grandson pursuing his Eagle Scout. I have been involved with the scouting program as an adult for the past 20 years, and served as a Scoutmaster for many many years. I am grateful for what it teaches young men. I have seen many of my scouts continue their pattern of service by serving our country in the military. I have watched them grow up and then go off to success in many areas including; collage, various skills training, and off to war in the Middle East. When I was a scout we were able to go visit Hill Air Force Base and see a lot of things the general public did not have access to, including the flight tower. The were flying the F4 Phantom back then. Many thanks to all the Veterans out there.

We use to go to OSh every year. Even the summers when Heather was at Culver Military Academy I would fly out of OSH to Culver on Friday, pick her up at their field and bring her back for the weekend.
Then OSH turned into the "county fair" and they raised their prices considerably. The last time we went during the week and it was really disappointing including the air show. Now I still go but only once every three or four years.
I was thinking about going this year but Eastern States scheduled a rally right over the top of OSH so I'm not sure what we will be doing. I'll look for your 195 if we go. I usually park at the farm across the street from the vintage area so we walk through that Vintage area several times a day. I'll also have to go see Dennis Simpson on the other end of the field in the Warbirds area.

Ken, one of my EAA Chapter members is staying across from Vintage in that campground. I know there are several over there. He is just west of the Ultralight Red Barn. Hope to see you. I am not always sitting under my wing, but hopefully I will be there if you walk by.

Nice looking A/C, Shaky Jake and all. Norm Podol used to keep a 190 at the Wetumpka International Airplane Patch back in the 60s when I was selling Cessnas there. Norm was an old line 141 driver, was on the team that accepted the A/C originally. Had some marvelous tales to tell. The best was initially there was no squat switch for the thrust reversers (this was remedied posthaste) and they managed to get 2 going backwards and 2 going frontwards in the air. That was also when they found out, the airflow when airborne overcame the strength of the reverser stowing mechanism, so they parked it with two shut off, and all went for new underwear.

Ken,
Sorry about the timing. Since my friend that used to do OSH made his bad landing, I haven't paid much attention to that. So, here we try to get in a summer season rally and .... Don't worry about missing it. When the newsletter (running a little late) come along, you will find that I have already planned the annual meeting to be at GMCMI at Chipawa Falls.
If we do this again, I will do my best to see that does not happen.
We have the same type issues with scheduling races and cruises with the sail club. There simply are no open summer weekends.

I wish I could go, but alas where I work you need to have been hired in 1989 or earlier to get any summer vacation. I'd sit right outside Scholler and grab a hookup spot as quick as you can. Under the wing camping is fun and all, but being able to walk back and relax in your own coach would be a real treat.
The dream of someday doing that is about the only reason I keep my coach. It was cool for camping with Cub Scouts, but the Boy Scouts just look at you like some lazy old man who likes to cuss at his generator.

We were planing on going to pa. and may still do so. OSH is not the draw for us that is use to be. We use to spend a week there. Now, as I said before, it is more like the county fair without the ferris wheel and more expensive.
Also with Colonel Ken not going to OSH we are rethinking our options.
We can always go next year if I am still around.
We will make the final decision later this month.

It used to be a gathering of people who had the talent and patience to build a machine that flies and they could admire the craftsmanship of their peers. Now its all about catering to the very few that have enough money to own a single engine turbo prop and meeting their expectations. The rest of us rent cars in Milwaukee and drive in.
