So I got an estimate from Schwabs for 2 different HT tires.

Both brands are Load Range E, 10 ply Steel Belted with fabric sidewalls.

First is the Toyo Open Country HT, 60k mile warranty. Definitely would be a great tire, they are quiet, and long lasting.

Second is the Sailun Terramax HT, 40k mile warranty, I have no experience with this type of tire, he did say they would be noisier than the Toyos.

The Toyos are $1500, the Sailun Terramax are less than $900. That is out the door.

Is road noise really a factor when considering a tire for a GMC MH?

I don't see us putting more than 3k miles on this coach per year, so am not going to wear out the tire before its useful life is up.

The tires had very similar tread, the Terramax was a little more blocky closer to the sidewall, and made in China

I welcome any comments.

Ihe big consideration might be warranty. However, due to the low mileage, and expected replacement time frame. I might consider the cheaper tire. Disclaimer, I bought 7 Chinese amde tires at Wal-Mart, mainly for the 3,500 or so Wal-Marts to get a replacement. Cost was about $140 per tire, mounted balanced, and Wal-Mart's full replacement warranty, good at any Wal-Mart without question..
They are round and ride well. No complaints.

Never even considered Wal-Mart, thank you. They certainly are everywhere.

I will have to see what they offer as well.

Tom, how did you get Walmart to install? We had two Walmart's refuse to install on coach. We were considering the Dextero or possibly BF Goodrich. Tire Kingdom would install BFG but was $250 higher plus $25 per tire road hazard.

I have the Toyos.
Road noise was a consideration for us.
Les Schwabs guarantee and service policy was also a consideration.
Do you have steel wheels or aluminum? Consider having extended valve stems installed no matter who you go with, fishing for the valve on the inside of an aluminum wheel is a pain.

That is not uncommon for Walmart.
If you really want to buy from them just bring in the wheel with the old tire on it and they should mount and balance the new tire.
If you have to you can tell them its from a Chevrolet pickup truck.

We have 16in Alcoas, and already have the extended metal valve stems.

Is road noise really noticeable in these coaches?

What? WHAT? Just a minute, let me pull over, can't hear a damn thing!

When I bought tires for the Twinkie II I was much more concerned with reliability than with price. It really doesn't matter if any Walmart will warranty a tire if the nearest Walmart is 150 miles away. Sort of like when you buy the house brand rebuilt starter from AutoZone or O'Reilys with a lifetime guarantee. It really doesn't help if you wind up replacing the starter every year. I'd much rather pay twice as much for a new starter and have it last for 10 years.

I haven't found road noise to be a consideration and this is the front tire I run: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/dodge-front-wheels-5-10/p34779-dodge-front-wheels.html I wouldn't worry about tire noise. I don't notice it and I have good hearing, but then again. I drive a Jeep with the same tires on it as a daily driver. I would be more concerned with warranty issues. That's probably the main drawback to buying off brand tires. You are not likely to ever make it to the mileage guaranty even at 40,000 miles.

I was in Les Schwab's last week getting prices; I got the same prices that
Jared listed and Schwab also gave me a price on a tire that was In between
the two Jared reported; this tire was a Mastercraft Courser, LRE, and an
out the door price of $1135.

Just a caution for those of you considering Les Schwab: Searching for a
map of their stores, I found that it's the 2nd largest tire seller in the
US, I could find none in the eastern US. So if you plan any travel east of
the Mississippi, you'll be on your own if you have tire trouble --
especially so if you choose one of the off-brand offerings.

Personally, I'll stick with US brands, or perhaps something from nationwide
WalMart.

I stopped to help a guy one time hauling a pop up camping trailer with a Ford Pickup. He had a flat and no spare. I asked why no spare and he said I have 4 new tires from Walmart and figured I did not need one. It was 120 miles to the nearest Walmart on a Saturday afternoon. We got there at 7:30 PM and they closed at 8PM. They did not have the tire in stock and we were told it would be Thursday before the next truck with tires came in if they could get one put on it. They also could not check to see if the warehouse had one until Monday.

We found a local tire store which was closed and telephoned the owner at home. He said he had a correct size tire in stock and to meet him at his store. Forty five minutes later we were back on the road headed back to his broken pickup. He saved the removed tire to turn in some day when he found a Walmart where he could wait for a few days for a new one to come in. I do not know if he had a spare wheel or not.

So much for 3500 Walmarts. They have to have what you need when you get there. They do a lot of ordering of tires rather than stocking them locally. Sams Club and Costco have a much larger selection in stock. Having a good spare negates the need for a replacement close by.

We are concerned with reliability as well Dave, but when the CFO looks at the budget..... and how few miles we will use per year..... She decided that the less expensive tires were the way to go.

And Rick at Les Schwab, whom I have dealt with for years, says it is actually a really good tire for the price. He had a buddy purchase a set from his recommendation 2 months ago for his Class A MH and he loves them.

So, I had Rick order 2 more since they only had 4 in stock, am dropping the wheels off on Monday on my way home from work (I am not moving this thing again until I replace the oil cooler lines, just waiting to hear back from JR Slaten), and Rick said they would be ready in about an hour. Just under $900 out the door.

You need seven. Don't use your best old tire for the spare. It will let you down when you most need it. Even it the spare wheel is a 16.5", get a new Firestone Transforce for it.

I just went through this, cost was a very big concern. I had cooper srm II
on.. great tires but they almost doubled in price.. so they were out. I
had looked online but the cost of shipping just crushed any chance.. I
shopped around , in tulsa there is not a lot of competition.. but i was
able to get:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/findTireDetail.do?ra=searchTiresBySize.do&fl=&tc=GITVL2&c=4&rcz=74137&pc=17870&ar=75&rf=t rue&rd=16&rc=OKTINT&cs=225
http://www.gtradial-us.com/en/SAVERO_HT2.html

i was able to talk them down to 90 per tire.. i have only had them for
about 1 month.. but so far they seem great

If I am going camping, that means I don't have to be anywhere in a hurry. I'm not driving this thing to a Doctors Appt or to a potential court date.

When you have roadside assistance you sit, wait, make some lunch, dinner, whatever, watch a movie and make the best of it.

It would be a flat tire, not what I would call an "Emergency Situation".

Best part is it is covered under my insurance. And some surprises can be an opportunity to have fun.

Jared

edit, I drove 35 miles home on those 12 year old tires, which happen to be Goodyears. I have already picked the best and it will be mounted on the spare rim to take the place of the bald Michelin that is on it now.

And some surprises can be an opportunity to have fun.

edit, I drove 35 miles home on those 12 year old tires, which happen to be Goodyears. I have already picked the best and it will be mounted on the spare rim to take the place of the bald Michelin that is on it now.

My last remark on this. The absolute worst thing you can do to a 12 year old tire is dismount and mount it again. The sidewall is likely failing already, and you just stretched it, twice! Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Take the next month's beer and skittles money and buy one more tire. You won't regret it. You will if you don't.

If it makes you feel better, I will leave the bald Michelin on the spare rim as you do make a good point.
