Could someone remind me again why a combiner doesn't act like a Boost Switch when the engine starter switch is engaged.

I am going to run a garden tractor battery to start my genset and I don't want the draw from an engine starter to kill it. Or should I always start the Genset and then use it to supplement the engine battery if needed. Or, thirdly should I just have separate battery cutoffs and bring them on-line manually?

My understanding is that the combiner only combines when the charging (source) voltage is high enough to combine the banks.

The load requirements don't affect combination - if they did, the batteries would be combined and you could drain all the batteries! Thus - defeating the purpose of the combiner.

I've read some docs that manually (with a switch) force the combiner (one way or the other. That is - combined or separated), thus replacing the Battery Boost function, but I was a little worried about passing the amount of current to start the engine through a 100 amp combiner. I've left my Battery Boost solenoid along with my Yandina C100.

The specs I find for the solenoids are 100-150 Amp continuous and 300-500 A for short bursts.

There is a caution about having the genset 12v charging the genset starting battery and having the power supply also trying to charge the same battery. Honda has advised a warning on that subject.
Put the combiner across the two outside terminals on the isolator, and be done with it. Gene has photos of how to do this.

Randy, you can do a manual switch or a combiner. I use a combiner to keep the house system from drawing from my lawn mower battery. If you use a manual switch, don't forget to flip it on and off at right times.

I just use a simple relay to combine he 2 banks when the ignition is on but not during the start sequence. There is a terminal on the fuse box that is hot only in the run position--not start. That won't charge the chassis battery when plugged in but I've never had the need to charge the house battery during long periods of storage (since I have no access to 110 for charging anything)

the combiner does all these things -- automatically--

i had to jump 5 gmc's at coosbay
that used switches and relays (that required you to
remember when to switch them on and off)

so do as you will, but automatic is good
