Are the exterior locks for utility door and such all the same key??

The only key we have is for the steering column. (Thank You Chuck.)

I am getting around to messing with the 78 that Frank has stored here. I would like to get the outside accesses open so I can put power onboard.
Are there any that are easily gotten behind? (If I can get behind a lock, I can take it out and get it keyed.)

When (IF) the ground dies out, I'm going to get underneath and try to pull the crank through two turns.
If it does, I will try to start it. If it does start, I will see if there is still AFT. That will be corrected and I will try to make it move.
If it moves, I will try to talk Frank into selling it as an item.
If we don't get that far, you will see a lot of nice parts on the block.

Matt

On my 78 Palm Beach the door key also opens the the other exterior compartments (fuel, water/power), as well as the glove box. The ignition key only does the ignition.

Remove the glove box lock, or the door lock.

Took them less than an hour to make me a new set of keys for my 77 coach....... and I had NO keys. Misplaced after 12 years.

Luckily enough he did remember where the title was.

Matt, do you mean the key for the small doors? Or, the Entrance Door? Small keys might be a "good luck finding them" item. I finally removed all the small exterior locks, and replaced them with ones from Camping World. New ones are all keyed the same. In fact, all the little replacement locks use the same key. Will keep out casual eyes but not a serious thief.
I still have one key that I cannot find a blank for. The exterior water inlet Made by Theford. E-mailed them, but got no joy.

Matt, the easiest to get to is the glove box lock. There is a trick to removing it and I don`t remember what it is but you might could take the whole door to locksmith and get one made.

That is strange, all of my locks are GM keyed.....

Maybe it depends on the year of the coach.

That would explain it..... I do forget that some of these chassis were sold to be done with whatever they decided to do with them.

Mine is a GMC, all of my exterior hatches and doors open with the same GM key that unlocks my door.

The fact that other companies used travel trailer hardware never crossed my mind.

Now I know, Thanks for the info,

Jared

Then again, none of the external compartments on my 76 Royale, water fill, gas, power, etc. have locks. Well, the water fill does now, because I just replaced it.

My Transmode (Norris Coach upfit) uses the same key for the entry door and the power hatch. GM lock cylinders.

On my 74 all the keys are different. I didn't even know the glove box had a lock. Now, is this the way it came from GM, or is this something that happened over the last 40 years. Doesn't make much difference.

So so you have gloves in your glove box? We were in a road rally many years ago. Tied for first place. Tie breaker question was "do you have gloves in your glove box?" We won.

As units left the factory, the ignition key was different from the door and glove box key. If it was a TransMode, GM had no responsibility beyond that as to what kind of key was used for what. If it was a MotorHome (stayed under control of GM), the accessory locks were all keyed the same. By the way, per Joe Ekl's presentation at Dothan and extensive knowledge, the keys were supplied by Briggs & Stratton. Yes, our 78 Royale had a different key for the fresh water cover. Other than that, all hatches were open.

Matt, contact Joe to see what he thinks of the situation.

I haven't found what all the keys I got with mine go to, it's a 1974. I do know the door lock key is different (must've changed the door lock at some point). There is a GM ignition key and door lock key on there, the door lock key now can only lock the glovebox. The electrical hatch uses a different key also. I still have one other key on there that I haven't found a lock for yet, but gonna leave it on there as you never know when it will turn up...lol..Oh, and I also only got one set of keys so am going to get a couple more made. Found out years ago that most of the camper manufacturers used the same couple of keys for the storage compartments. Glenn

Wanna hear something really funny?

The key that opens the shore power cord hatch on my 1983 Shasta Travel trailer will also turn the lock on the handle that opens my garage door.......

Not as funny as the time in the '70's when I was TDY in San Diego: A
companion and I went to dinner in our dark brown Mercury rental car. After
dinner we went back across the street and got into our car. As I pulled
out of the parallel parking place my companion noticed laundry, not ours,
in the back seat. Shocked, I backed back into the parking spot.

After looking around, we decided to get into the second car behind us,
which didn't have anything in the back seat -- another dark brown Mercury.
:-)

Wonder just how many different key codes Mercury uses? -- Or GMC, for that
matter (content).

Joe Ekl also revealed that secret in his Dothan presentation. Was I the only
one paying attention?

http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Ekl_Lock-Presentation.pdf

Of the various permutations, GM could only use 3,000 for each blank. They
used the same blanks for the whole model year. The sequence is below.

³A² 1975
³B² 1975
³C² 1976
³D² 1976
³E² 1973 and 1977
³H² 1973 and 1977
³J² 1974 and 1978
³K² 1974 and 1978

I suspect Ford did about the same even though they were the first to
introduce the reversible key in the last half of the 1960's.

Now you know the rest of the story.

Rather then climd under to turn the engine over pull the plugs spray marvel
mystery oil in the spark plug holes then hook up a battery and turn over
the engine using the starter. The marvel oil will lube the engine while
cranking it. If it rotayes try to start it after you reinstalled the plugs.
