I have to drive to eastern Pensilvania to pick up some doors I bought for my '29 dodge.
This is a 1200 mile trip each way.

Part of me want to hop in the sebring convertible and drive like mad and get it over with.
The other part says take the GMC, take more time and make it a vacation...

The down side to the GMC of course is a lot more gas...

Keith,

If you run into bad weather, will the doors fit in the car w/ the top up?

They will either fit inside or I'll pull a small trailer.
But they are small, I think I can get 2-3 in the trunk.

Tolls? Neither enjoys tolls!
do they charge that third axle?

Shipping is a problem with the seller he doesn't want to deal with it.
They are also rare old doors with glass in them. I'd really hate to have them damaged.

I had a gmc couch bunk shipped from sirum in fla all the way to Seattle and it cost like $300. Came shrink wrapped on a pallet via truck. Maybe seller will spend some time to palletise the doors for some extra $. ??

My thinking on a trip is that you drive what is most comfortable and due to the mileage, you will be staying overnight somewhere...might as well be in you home on the road. Take in the sights and you don't have to be in any rush. Drive until you get tired or map out your route on where to camp overnight on the way there and somewhere different on the way back. Sure it will cost more for gas but you'll recoup some of that by having your own motel with you...lol... I always look at the convenience and having all your stuff with you that you enjoy. Plus the security and not having to stay in a motel is worth a lot. What better excuse to take the motorhome do you need...Road Trip...

that is a tough trip. what is there to see to and fro?

did you look at flying out there, renting a car and driving back? flight and rental might equal gas and tolls. one way?

I learned a long time ago that a decision that is hard to make is hard because the options are equally weighted in pros and cons. So IMHO and FWIW, there is no wrong answer. Either way can leave you wishing you had chosen the other, or glad you chose as you did.

Take a look at the black list and, if applicable, the GMCMI member list. If there are individuals you would like to see, contact them and see if they would be up for a visit. That may lay out your route for you, and make the decision obvious. You can then also announce your route here and see who or what turns up. If I had the time I'd take the GMC and make a vacation out of it. No time to play around on the trip, then I would just burn the miles and do two days out and two days back.

Or, if you can wait, see if someone is going past the pickup point on their way to the GMCMI fall rally in WI that would be willing to haul them.

We have LOTS of family in Central PA (Lebanon County) so we go there often. We always fly, due to the time/distance constraints, but if we had the time, we would MUCH prefer driving the coach and hang the gasoline cost. If you go with the GMC, plan a stop at Ricketts Glen State Park:

http://www.stateparks.com/ricketts_glen_state_park_in_pennsylvania.html

They have camping, hiking, waterfalls, a lake, etc. Beautiful place. Also, Hershey has plenty of attractions and is equally beautiful in it's own way. There are plenty of other places we plan to visit while there on family visits and we generally take a short road trip somewhere.

They say that if you have a tough decision to make you simply flip a
coin. Before that coin hits your hand you'll either know what you WANT
the coin to show or you truly don't care which way the flip goes.

Personally, I like the peace and relaxation of driving the GMC. If I'm
driving something faster it always seems someone's in my way, impeding
progress. Then again, I'm happy at 62-63mph in the GMC. +75mph is the
preferred speed in anything else.

If you come across Michigan's upper peninsula, the Mackinac Bridge will charge you for the 3rd axle. The toll is quite high per Matt Colie.

Are you by chance a member of NSRA? If so, maybe you could find someone in the "Fellow Pages" to pick them up for you and deliver them to the Street Rod Nats in Louisville and meet them there. That would be cheaper and you both could see a good show.

Cross PA on Interstate 80 - no tolls - drop south from it to your
destination.
PA Turnpike charges the third axle

We have a place on Lake Michigan very close to the Mackinac Bridge. We go to the UP three or four times a year in our GMC and I am always annoyed that it costs me $5.00 more to cross than some 40' long motor home weighing tons more than we do in our Palm Beach. Toll is $19 to go across with a towed.

Mackinac Bridge Fare Schedule

Passenger Vehicle - $2.00 per axle or $4.00 per car
Passenger car, van, motorcycle, station wagon, SUV, pick-up truck, and school bus. (A van is a two-axle four tire vehicle not primarily intended for carrying cargo or commercial goods.)

All Others - $5.00 per axle
Vehicles not meeting passenger vehicle characteristics including but not limited to tractor trailers, buses, motor homes and step or cube vans.

Surely you have needs for the GMC that might be filled in RV Surplus
Heaven, Elkhart, IN & environs? Especially if you have any interior
refurbishing to do, that's a great place to shop. There are campgrounds
there for the half-way layover -- you'll need AT LEAST a full day.

Yes, that third "axle" DOES cost (big time) on toll roads and bridges. :-(
