The drain in the rear bath sink has always leaked a little. Today I took it apart and found a strange thing. There is no physical attachment between the sink and the drain pipe. The sink just has a smooth nipple on the bottom that fits into a cup on the end of the ABS pipe. It doesn't even fit all that snugly. The rest of the plumbing is typical collars and washers.

Is this normal? Shouldn't there at least be some plumbers putty in the "cup"

David,

No, that is not normal. The sink drain should be connected just as you
expected, with "collars and washers". You've got some plumbing to do.

I'm surprised that you don't have septic odors from the arrangement you
described. Not having them is just one of the benefits of separate gray
and black water tanks, I guess. :-)

Thanks Ken. I think for now I'll apply a good seal of plumber's putty until I can work out something more permanent.
