Bummer.

A rattle sound from the rear of the transmission could be the transfer chain hitting the chain cover. We had that happen on the Clasco bringing it back from Florida. Unfortunately, there is no fix for that short of removing the transmission, removing the chain cover and fixing whatever is allowing the gear and chain to move rearward under thrust. In our case it was a $.50 keeper that had come loose or broken.

Sound travels easily all over the drive unit - engine, transmission and final drive - so just because you hear it in one place does not mean that is where it is coming from.

The very first thing I would check would be the engine mounts. If one of those broke or the rubber deteriorated, or a bolt was left off, then under load the engine can shift or lift which could cause all kinds of noises. There is one at the front of the engine just under the harmonic balancer and two on the transmission. Get a flash light and shine it up through the two holes on the cross member to make sure both bolts are there. Put a socket with an extension on it and make sure they are tight. There is a threaded insert molded into the rubber that receives each bolt so don't over do the tightening. Use a pry bar to try to lift the engine off the mount to see if the rubber split. Check also to see if they properly installed the long bolt which holds the final drive to the side of the engine. If that is loose or missing it may be banging on something.

Hope this helps.

it's been cool today and not using the AC at all. I open the hatch - motor
idling - no odd noise. Step on the gas hard and the clicking starts.

foot of the gas and it goes quiet. Start out in drive slow applying gas
and no strange sounds - get it up to around 40 plus and apply gas to speed
up and it starts. less at first and as I continue to apply gas it gets
louder. ease off on gas - goes quiet or at time faint.

At 35 go into 2nd and bring it up to 40 on an incline - the noise starts -
ease off on gas and it quietens down. I drove for a ways with the hatch
open and it really sounds like coming from the back of the engine - tranny
area on the passenger side.
