Gary,
I need to be sure I understand the alternator tensioner; please correct
this description:
The hex stock (1/2 FOOT long?) is threaded in one end to accept the
threaded rod end for adjustment, with the hex nut to lock it. The other
end is bored smooth to accept the unthreaded rod with the compression
spring over it. That smooth bore is lubricated so the rod moves in and out
freely to keep the serpentine belt tight.
I haven't yet had a chance to check whether such a tensioner will work on
my setup; I hope so.
Thanks,
Ken H.

If that is indeed the set-up, i would be worried (maybe for nothing) about long term wear in the alternator pivot from having the necessary loose pivot bolt. Engine and drivebelt vibrations are going to put that pivot through hell. Most factory self-adjusting belt tensioners have a bushed & lubricated pivot designed to constantly move.
Aside from the alternator pivot issue, I like the set-up. I can see that lots of time has been invested in getting it to this point.

Ken,
First, the shortest piece of hex stock from McMaster-Carr is one-half
foot. Since I needed two six inch pieces, that's what I got.
I drilled each piece completely through 25/64". This gave clearance
for the 3/8" blank rod eye. It's also the tap size for a e/8" heli-coil.
So I tapped one end for the 3/8" heli-coil and installed it. This gave
me a sleeve to slide over the blank and compress the die spring.
I found that was a little close, so I ran a 13/32" drill in the unthreaded
portion. I hope this is a little bit clearer explanation.

Les,
Unless something is out of round, the only movement should be very slight
and very slow as a result of belt stretch.
We did the pulley mods on the lathe, so it's all concentric. It's amazing
how well it all worked out when it's just
shade tree engineering. Occasionally a blind squirrel will fall into a
large pile of acorns.LOL

Darn it, that should have been two 3" pieces. That equals
one six inch piece. Talk about dumb!

I would have to think that any belt will generate heat as it is constantly
being flexed around a corner.
When heated, it would probably stretch a little. A V belt, having a fixed
adjustment, will undoubtedly
get loose and slip a little. That will generate more heat, thus more slip,
etc. The serpentine belt
has more surfaces to grip at the start and usually has a spring loaded
idler, which maintains the
tension. All in all, the serpentine seems very durable and trouble-free for
a long time.
At least, that's been my experience. YMMV

Sort of related question: Does a serpentine belt slip less on the
alternator when it is putting out a lot of amps?
