Hi, I'm looking for parts for my new (to me) 74 GMC.
1. Dash light switch knob (from what I see the knob and rod are removed from the switch via a push button on switch) or should I just glue the knob back on the rod?
2. Air Pressure switch for leveling system. Part number and where to buy.
3. Passenger side Exhaust gasket.
4. New belts for engine. Part numbers and where to buy.
5. Inside vent cover. Old style that has square corners.
6. Slides you attach curtains with for the front cab surround and also where to buy the curtains?
7. Coolant recovery tank or repair due to crack in bottom of plastic tank.
8. 12 volt fuse block in cabinet above converter..very touchy, any movement of glass fuses drops the connection. Thinking of upgrading to a newer style with newer fuses.
9. Any ideas about replacing sofa? The original chairs were replaced with a green sofa fold over top bed. I would like to replace with either a different comfortabe sofa or a bunk setup or even the chairs. If I go with the bunks (for grandkids) I would also need a source and all hardware.
10. Dining booth removal for a place to install a tv and maybe seating, or should I leave original?
11. Roof top TV antenna. Does not have a tv antenna at this time. What have others done and what seems to work best...Winegard with crank up? Suggestions and installation instructions would be great. I plan on mounting the tv on the passenger side so would mount an antenna on that side of the coach.
12. Rear folding bed. Should I keep that and just get a full size mattress to place on top of the current setup? What have others done and what is most comfortable?
13. Bathroom lighting. Both original lights need replacing or at least the lenses. What is available?
14. Drivers area lighting with the speaker and light. The plastic light covers need replacement...where to purchase? I touched the one over the driver seat and it disintegrated...lol
14. Drivers area console that attaches to dash. Just a table, would like something with cupholders to go in that area or just cut holes in the present table, any ideas from anyone that has upgraded that?
15. Microwave placement. Have seen pictures of other GMCs that have put a microwave in the storage area above the drawers in the hallway. I like that idea better than removing the stove and placing one down low..any ideas? Microwave model numbers? What did you do to wire in the microwave to the 120 volt circuit?
Sorry for the long list but that's just what I have found so far...and thanks for any help or suggestions..

JB Weld is your friend. This knob and rod are very standard GM parts but JB Quick will be easier for now.

Thanks midlf, you're probably right, might want to invest in some JB Weld stock before I get started..lol...The old plastic in the knob has disintegrated due to age much like other plastic parts in the motorhome, some however do not have big enough parts to put back together...lol..I appreciate your taking time to give me pointers while on this journey into the unknown. Sounds kind of like the twilight zone huh? I may not be crazy now but might invest in a straight jacket before I get too far along..lol

Looks like mine had the Airstream curtain hangers that you had to slip the material through..these look better as you can use the pin type hooks and maybe use drapes cut down to size for those areas. Will have to get out the sewing machine and practice up...lol..

Not to say a discouraging word here, but grandkids will go once or twice and that’s it. Build the coach for yourself! Get a tent for them

Lenses are available as well as replacement units and replacement LED lights. GMC Vendors

You need to look thru the photo site for ideas.

I recommend putting the microwave up above the cooktop, your wife will hate getting on her and and knees to see what is going on in the MW.
Replaced stove/oven with convection microwave and added storage under cooktop.

All these things that you have asked about need to be done in steps. How handy are you? Can you do the work yourself or are you going to go the expensive route and use plastic? You can take everything out of the coach in about 4 hours. I spent over 650 hours rebuilding the coach that these picture came from.
Do you have the manuals? You can to here and download what you need for your year and coach.

The CFO is just finishing our curtains. She reworked some curtains from our previous house that she cut down.

Thank you powerjon, very informative.. I will be doing all the work on the coach myself unless it is something way over my head but so far haven't gotten cold feet...lol..I learned long ago that if you try and repair something and it takes you more than one try it is still cheaper and sometimes better than what you would have gotten if you paid someone to do it..and besides how else are you going to learn anything new. Always keep the challenges coming so we're constantly learning, now if we could just remember what we learned...lol

Hey midlf, let me know how they turn out and maybe some info and pictures..I will be tackling them in the future hopefully...If the CFO is wanting to keep the sewing machine warmed up so she doesn't get out of practice just let me know...lol

If you don't have the manuals, get them (free to download at Bdub's). When in doubt, read the directions.....
It would seem from your writing that you are literate and have an IQ over 80..
Well, that puts you a leg up on most of the people you would have to pay to work on your prize relic.
More than that, if the job doesn't come out to your satisfaction, you don't have to take it back.
And, if you have any questions, come back here for answers. Aw there are corespondents in Europe and Australia, the board never sleeps.
Other point.. Labor in most shops these days is over 100$hr.
This means that with very few exceptions, you can buy any tool you actually need to do a job and amortize it in that ONE job.
(And if you need it again, it is free the next time.)
What you may try to cultivate is a helper. This can be a 12yo that knows what a tool looks like. That way you don't have to crawl back out from under the coach when you find out that you have a 1/2" wrench and you needed a 9/16".
(This has never happened to me, but I have hear about it.)
The advice about not doing anything to the interior until you have spent some time in is very sound. Remember that your coach is not a prototype. A lot of thought went into making the interior work.

Hi Matt, that has always been my train of thought, I feel that I can do just as good a job as the others and you also gain the knowledge to maybe help others. I met a lady at a lumber store the other day and I could tell she was fretting about something, finally she came over and asked me how you cut the hole in a countertop for a sink. I explained the process to her and she said I made it sound easy..I told her that it is hard to mess up as long as she measured and remeasured and then cut. Plus she would get the satisfaction of having done it herself. I think I convinced her and hope it turned out well for her. I do have a helper in training. Our 2 year old granddaughter is going to be a tomboy. She loves helping and going out to the camper when I'm working on it. It will be time to finally get her and her 1 year old brother out camping. A funny story..in the class C i redid I had put some mouse traps in it because at one time it had mice and I was just checking if they were all gone...I had been working under the bathroom sink and laid the mousetrap on top of the sink and then went inside our home to get something. Of course our granddaughter wanted to come out to the camper with me so I brought her, I helped her in the door and what did she do? Went straight to the sink and stuck her finger in the mousetrap...dang, it hurt me more than her..they sure are quick at that age and I guess she learned what a mousetrap is...I'm holding off on the interior until I know exactly what will work better in there. I have a few ideas from past campers I have done. I'm sure it will have a 40 inch LED, a soundbar and a fireplace in it. I picked up a 22 inch LED for the rear bedroom yesterday. Now I need an antenna to feed to them.. The way they ran the wiring looks to make running coax and hd cabling fairly easy. I'll post pictures when she is done...Glenn
