Over the past few years there has been a lot of posts regarding the value or necessity of a coach appraisal and an agreed value insurance policy by many on this net. The following story should be taken to heart if you have an old coach which you have sunk a whole lotta dough in.
I have spent considerably North of 25k on The Pig since it's purchase. I was concerned about a loss which would allow my carrier to total out my rig because the "average" value of our coaches can be anywhere from 5-15k depending upon the market. I contacted Jim K at applied and completed the questionnaire and Jim's appraisal came back at 42k even though my cockpit was gutted. I used the coach for several longer trips with only minor incidents over 5+k miles of travels. A month ago I was heading to Bend Or. Towing a car hauler trailer full of dirt bikes and the assorted tools/spares/fuel etc and had the misfortune of striking a large deer at 65 mph about 30 miles North of Goldendale on hwy 97. The deer literally fell from the sky directly dead center but with a quick stab of brake and a little steering input I somehow managed to place him on the right nose. After the initial shock I brought the rig to a stop on the shoulder. It was getting dark and there was no room to get completely off the roadway so after a quick rad hose and fan check I drove a few miles to a wide shoulder area. The damage to the smc was severe, the radiator support and radiator shoved back, battery punctured and leaking but radiator and hoses were good. After patching and tilting the battery to keep the magic from leaking out the now concave front of the coach was carefully massaged back out into place then extensive drilling and stitching with rebar tie wire conducted to hold it all in place and out from under the front wheel. We made it to Bend and completed our dirt bike trip as planned.
Once home I made a claim on my insurance policy and an appraiser was dispatched to my house for inspection. He asked me the year of the coach over the phone and when I told him and he already knew about the deer strike he became immediately concerned that the rig was a total loss. I explained to him that I had an appraisal as well as agreed value policy and he was very surprised at the foresight. Apparently most people do not think about such things. The initial estimate for repairs is $16,000. If I had not hired Jim K at applied for the appraisal and purchased the correct type of policy my coach would have totaled out and best case scenario I would have gotten $15,000 for it.
