Took the GMC to the lake yesterday to meet a friend who purchased a 'newsed' boat a couple weeks ago. (very jealous since my boat's engine is still waiting on the machine shop to finish up the heads).
Temp was about 93* in Pueblo, Co. It had horrible vapor lock; died or tried every time we stopped for more than 10sec. Each stop I'd throw it in neutral and run ~3000rpm to try to keep the fuel moving.
What's the best way to add a return line? Add it to the tank, or filler tube?
I'm going to tee into the feed line just before the carb, run the return to either the main tank or the filler tube near the tank.

You will need some restriction in the return line. A #50 drill works fine on the GMC. This size was determined by measuring the orifice on a fuel filter with a return line fitting. My carb and return line is fed by a Carter 4070. Not sure of the number but it is the Carter preferred for the GMC.
As far as the best place to plumb the return. Tank or filler neck should make no difference. This is usually determined by what is most convenient or possible.

I had a pressure regulator with a return hose at the carb inlet fitting.
It was plumbed with rubber hoses. When I changed out my engine I replaced
the rubber line to metal and relocated the pressure regulator to just above
cross member. The return line was plumbed into the filler neck.

My pump from the surge tank runs up to a fuel distribution block about 6" from the carb. The return line is connected to this fuel block and returns to the surge tank, The restriction orifice is located at the fuel block end of the return line.
In tank fuel pumps feed the surge tank and there is a return line from the surge tank to the aux tank. The surge tank is about 1 gallon. All the lines from the fuel block are insulated.
