Good Morning all.

I am the new owner of a 78 Royale. Took it out for the 1st time last weekend on a short trip up the coast in preparation for longer and more distant adventures. Here are my questions.

1. Driving the coach on the freeway: traveled around 55 to 65 MPH- what kind of MPG should I expect at those speeds.?

2. Also noticed the rear end of the coach kind of wandering and me having to make constant corrections to the steering wheel. Not excessive, but noticeable. Should I look at my air bags, steering box, should I install rear sway bars....................?

3. What's the correct tire pressure

4. When I operate my water pump it sprays water out of the city water fill inlet...that can't be right. Pump works fine otherwise

5. I did not get much "stuff out of the black water tank when flushing with a jet flush thing(I am new to RV's) is there a best way to empty both holding tanks?

6. Speaking of tanks...I have a crack in my grey water tank at the outlet to the discharge valve-what is a good way to repair the crack without replacing the tank?

7. The 2 switches at the door entrance inside the cabin- what are these for? If I use one, it dims the lights and apparently, trips the breaker at the hook- up site. This is certainly not right.

8. I have a newer dometic fridge...It works but at times gives me E3 and E4 error codes. I turn it off and on and then it works fine-(for a while.)

9. Also, I am still looking for the LP Gas access cover hatch.

10. Any tips on how to use, prepare and avoid problems is also welcomed

11.
There will be more questions but this should be good for now. I appreciate any input as I am a first time owner of this magnificent piece of Americana....Always wanted a GMC and now I have one!

Thank you all in advance.

Don't worry about it

2. Also noticed the rear end of the coach kind of wandering and me having to make constant corrections to the steering wheel. Not excessive, but noticeable. Should I look at my air bags, steering box, should I install rear sway bars....................?

Tire pressure, shocks, airbags, wheel bearings. Check everything. As they say, "if you haven't done it, it hasn't been done"

3. What's the correct tire pressure

Depends on the tires. 60 to 65 is a good start.

4. When I operate my water pump it sprays water out of the city water fill inlet...that can't be right. Pump works fine otherwise

Nope. Bad valve somewhere.

5. I did not get much "stuff out of the black water tank when flushing with a jet flush thing(I am new to RV's) is there a best way to empty both holding tanks?

Let all the air out of the bags to drop the end as low as possible.

6. Speaking of tanks...I have a crack in my grey water tank at the outlet to the discharge valve-what is a good way to repair the crack without replacing the tank?

Best repair is getting a new tank. Other than that, lots of epoxy.

7. The 2 switches at the door entrance inside the cabin- what are these for? If I use one, it dims the lights and apparently, trips the breaker at the hook- up site. This is certainly not right.

Wiring diagrams are readily available.

8. I have a newer dometic fridge...It works but at times gives me E3 and E4 error codes. I turn it off and on and then it works fine-(for a while.)

No idea.

9. Also, I am still looking for the LP Gas access cover hatch.

Post in Swap Meet. A picture of the opening with dimensions would be helpful.

10. Any tips on how to use, prepare and avoid problems is also welcomed

Take a spare everything with you and keep the Blacklist handy.

11.
There will be more questions but this should be good for now. I appreciate any input as I am a first time owner of this magnificent piece of Americana....Always wanted a GMC and now I have one!

Thank you all in advance.

I can comment on the city water inlet fitting spraying water as mine was dribbling water from it when the pump was pressurized.

There is a check valve incorporated into the fitting and more than likely has a dried out gasket.

Best fix would be to replace the entire assembly, they are readily available.

Cheaper fix which is what I did for a temporary fix is to replace the gasket where the hose threads into the fitting, and install a plug, they are readily available as well.

The plug is usually dangling on a rubber string at the fitting but after years of exposure they rot and fall off.

If you don't plan on using the city water inlet, plug it and forget it.

Welcome to the forum..... I am new as well and am learning a lot by asking questions and browsing what some of the other owners have done to fix problems on their coaches.

for#8, Sergio, search "dometic refrigerator e3 and e4 fault codes"
AND/OR search "dometic refrigerator manual download"

You can also visit www.dometicmanuals.com to download or order manuals

I found fault codes for my Norcold this way.

Sergio,
Welcome Aboard. I have a 78 Royale Rear Bath. The two switches near the door operate the porch light and the interior floor lighting. On my coach the floor lighting has a light near the stair to the cockpit and another towards the rear. They make great night lights.

Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions specific to the 78 Royale.

My coach wandered a bit (OK more than a bit) when I got it.

No longer though, after...
1) Adjusting the steering box
2) Replacing a very worn relay arm with a Lenzi unit
3) Installing a set of Straight Track bogie devices on the middle wheels

On my coach (heavily modified by the POs so I never know what is stock), there are two switches on the cabinet by the door. One turns on the walkway lights (on the dinette seat bases), and the other fires off the updated water heater. There's a red light above that switch that illuminates if the heater doesn't successfully light.

Also, my fridge will error out when firing up on gas once in a while - normally when it hasn't been used for a while. I just assume it's because of air in the line going to the pilot light... it always comes on with a couple attempts, and works every time on AC or DC power.

You did good buying a late model Royale, IMHO - it's a really, really well-appointed rig that should give you plenty of enjoyment in high style.

Glad to see another new member to the 78 Royale Rear bath club, sounds like yours is a little more trip ready than mine. I have started doing some mechanical refreshes and system checks, but have a stripped out interior that needs a total rework. I do have a few extra parts if your looking for anything, but no extra propane hatch.

Good luck with your new toy, I will be interested to see how all goes with the coach.

On my 76 Royale the two switches are for porch lite and floor lites. The floor lites has a pair of wires that run under the coach from the door to a lite that is up near the steps. My wires are about 12 gage and are attached to the underside by clamps. if there is slack in these wires they can come in contact with the exhaust pipe and may now be shorted causing your problem.
