Presently at Springfield, Illinois with 7 coaches. Went to Lincoln Museum
today. What a sobering experience. Also visited the Lincoln Library as well
as the family Tomb. Very special places. Then went grocery shopping and
back to camp. We fixed spaghetti and everyone contributed their own dishes.
These shared evening meals are very special. We all enjoy them very much.
Off towards St. Louis tomorrow.

Yes, there are several stretches of the intact original 2 lane. Some with
original billboards and Burma Shave signs, although they are not original
ones, as they would be stolen in days by collector hounds. Some of the
smaller towns have restored old buildings, turned them into museums. There
are still many old landmarks and roadside attractions to be seen, but you
have to stay off the interstate highways to do that. Some of the more
famous ones are hard to find without a guidebook or special maps. We find
that the campground hosts are an excellent source of local info, as are the
other campers in the parks. Wherever the GMC coaches go, there is always a
good number of interested people that gather around and want to know where
we are going. Many wish for the day when they can do what we are doing.
Drive those coaches, that is why they were made. Not to be garage queens or
lawn ornaments. We are having a ball.

Out here in the West, there are long stretch of original 66.
On the way back from Texas, there was a bad accident and we were routed on to the 66 for 15 miles.
The road was in excellent shape.
Jim and the gang, we have a sewer dump here and electrical should you have time to swing by.

Have a few minutes now to take the time to thank the Great Lakers GMC club
for hosting us at Potato Creek State Park. In particular the Thornbergs,
and J.R Wright. It was also good to put a face with many of the people whom
I have only communicated with on the GMCnet.
On behalf of all of us on the Route 66 Rolling Rally, thank you one and
all. If you are ever out West, be sure and let us know and we will do our
best to repay the favour.

Jim K., thanks for the offer. We have not decided which route we will be
taking back North. If we are near the shop, we will be sure to stop.

Jim and (hopefully) Dwayne et al,

I don't know how much time you plan to spend in Williams, AZ when you get out that way, but Route 66 is their main street and has quite a few historic buildings and tourist attractions. The Grand Canyon Railroad RV Resort is really nice, and if you have time, a trip to the GC on the train is a delight. Also, east of there in Winslow, is one of the old Harvey House hotels (La Posada Hotel) that has been restored after serving as the headquarters of the Santa Fe Railroad for a number of years. There is an excellent restaurant called the Turquoise Room. Highly recommended. We had lunch there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Don't forget Meteor Crater as well. They also have a very nice RV park.

I'm not positive that Oklahoma's brag that it has the most miles of original US-66 routing is accurate, but we do have lots of it! I don't remember for sure whether it is Vinita or Miami in NE Oklahoma that still has a stretch of original 2-lane concrete in town. Most of what remains of US-66 in Oklahoma has been relabeled as OK-66 and it remains the "Main Street" of many of the towns. There are books available to enable a person to actually retrace the old route in probably 90% or more of Oklahoma.

Every September for the past dozen or more years, a ham radio special event takes place over 11 days where stations on old 66 in various towns "get on the air" to enable others to contact these towns/cities. I have been the coordinator of the Oklahoma City operation for the past two years. Each special event operation creates its own QSL (acknowledgement) card to confirm contacts with other stations who send their own QSL card and a S.A.S.E. to cover mailing the return card. I think our Oklahoma City group contacted around 1600 or more stations during last year's event.

Well, today was a journey from Cahokia, Illinois to Battlefield, MO. at
Randy Van Winkle's place. We will be here tonight and tomorrow night,
leaving for Vinita, OK. on the following day.Today was a scheduled
maintence stop. Turns out there is a bit much more maintence to do. When we
started engines this morning, John and Deb Harper's coach began to run very
rich. So, we just put them in gear and headed for the nearest gas station.
All 4 coaches filled up and we headed out for our next adventure. When we
got up to speed, Harper's coach seemed to smooth out, so we rolled along to
the first rest stop and pulled off. When we were all finished, and once
again ready to leave, the coach flooded and would not restart. The float
sank again. So, I pinched off the fuel line and John started the engine.
When it began to stumble for lack of fuel, I unclamped the hose, and he
threw it into gear, and off he went. Straight through to Randy's without
stopping or shutting off the coach. I followed as chase car, and the other
coaches went onto a side road to see more route 66 attractions. When I
arrived at Randy's, I took the carb apart again and replaced the gasket and
put a new float in that Randy had gotten locally. We still need to replace
the Onan cylinder head gaskets and put on a new shift cable and a lower
steering column bearing and clip. Some of our group decided to go to
Branson, Mo to take in a show and they will rejoin us tomorrow. Ron and
Pattie Smith broke a part on their 5th wheel hitch, and cannot resume until
they replace it on Monday. So much for the traveling road show. More later.

Sounds like a gong show.
At least glad you made it to randys.

At least glad you made it to randys.
I saw the weather report showed heavy rain there.

Yes, lots of rain this morning so we could not park the coaches out on the grass like we had planned. But no problem getting everyone situated. We set up the tables in the barn to keep out of the rain. Had many of the local GMC owners here for dinner and a great time. The Flatlanders are providing breakfast in the morning.

We are having a great time!!!

Life in a GMC; but, as usual, GMCers do what they have to do with a little
from their friends. If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. The rest of
us will stand by watching and envying you, even the challenges.

I left my purse at a diner when Bob and I went through Miami, with the old
cobbled streets of the "beginning" of rt 66 in OK. I had to make the
45-minute trip (one way) back from our rv park to get my purse via the toll
road in the toad. I took pictures in the dark of the street banner in town
that showed I was at the beginning of rt 66. That was a memorable spot for
us.

Enjoying your reports, Jim.

Hi - when you get to the L.A. area, if you have time, the Autry Western Heritage Museum has this display.

Well, yesterday was another adventure. First the good news. Dwayne Jacobson
and Sharon shook off their bonds that the Mechanic in Kennewick, Wa had
them sequestered with, at long last and drove their coach to LaGrande, Or.
After convincing a very stubborn mechanic to at least change out the
transmission governor to see (which we all know to be true) if the missing
gears come back (they did much to the mechanics suprise) Dwayne and Sharon
got under way on an intercept course to meet the rest of us somewhere along
the route 66 near Santa Fe, NM. Now, for the not so good news. Deb and John
Harper's quadrajet carb finally became so troublesome and frustrating to
the group of Route 66 travelers, that we (mostly Deb) called for the
"dreaded HOOK" and were towed to Oklahoma City last night where the crack
Camping World technical mechanical staff will jump right on the problem,
work their miracles and prepare them to once again join the Route 66
Rolling Rally. Some of our group are heading to Amarillo and Santa Fe to
see about a medical issue with one of the group. We hope to all join up
again there.
Jim Hupy Rolling Rally at Water's Edge RV and Cabin Resort in Vinita, Ok. A
spectacular park right on the waters edge at Grand Lake 'O the Cherokees.
P.S. Three cheers for Randy and Margie VanWinkle, as well as the
Flatlanders GMC group. In particular, Linda and Al VanWinkle, Joan and Max
Kanel, T.J. Dugan and Larry Nelson. What a great bunch of welcoming and
friendly people. There may have been more of you working so hard to feed us
and make us feel welcome. If there were, thank you as well. We were busy
most of the time doing coach maintence so might have missed someone.

Hi Jim and all, sounds like a great trip. Wish my GMC was ready for the road..I'd be there. If you ever get down Arizona way here is a great place to stay. We stayed there about 7 years ago after I bought a fifth wheel in San Diego, CA..and camped all the way back to Kansas...it was my first camper. The Canyon Motel & RV Park thecanyonmotel.com is in Williams,Arizona on historic Route 66. It is 60 miles south of the Grand Canyon so you definitely need to see it if you have never been. The Park has old train cars and since we stayed has really grown. The people had just purchased it when we stayed and they are very friendly. They were from California. Anyways it is beautiful there and a great place to stay.
Jim I will be contacting your business soon as the new (to me ) 1974 GMC has an exhaust leak on the passenger side..I guess most develop this..so I will be needing a gasket. Thanks and hope you guys have a great and trouble free trip...Just wish I could have been there to enjoy the sights and great company.
