Hi Jim,

You are indeed in for a treat in Auburn today. The great art deco buildings and furnishings alone are eye watering. Then you see what they hold and babble is about the best one can do for speech. Enjoy!

Great News. See you and Darlene in a few days. Judy and I are at the
Gilmore museum complex in Hickory Corners, Michigan tonight. Tired but
still in awe of the automotive displays here. A must see. Tomorrow night
finds us in Auburn, In. Auburn, Cords, and dusenbergs, oh my. Coaches doing
well.

I doesn't help my cause when you add descriptions of what those on the
Route 66 Rally will see.
It looks like the engine is on it's way today with a potential 5 working
day delivery.
I did a bit too much walking yesterday and feel it this morning after a
restless uncomfortable nights sleep to boot.
It's getting harder to just wait to get going again.
We might get out this afternoon and do a drive by your former home plus the
Lab.
Sharon 3 did her fill of shopping the last 2 days - a closeout sale at
Coldwater Creek and then a great sale at Macy's.
Ron Smith got us in touch with a mechanic friend here who made arrangements
for us to buy parts from O'Reilly's using his discount.
Yesterday's purchases of List $392.57 cost us $193.35 (about $200 savings)
and there's more to buy.
I think I need to look at the rad at this same time, not sure how easy it
is to re and re at a later time if need be. When we are spending this
amount what is a little more worth in the long run.
So have the following ordered: Dick Paterson Engine complete with
Springfield Distributor. (I have a D P carburator already that is
relatively new). A Manny Transmission and Torque converter. water pump,
fan clutch, all new hoses, JR Slaten oil pressure -SS lines, Curtis Split
Shroud, new NGKXR5IX plugs at .038 gap, Manny SS headers, new front motor
mount, new 180 degree thermostat, new fan belts, Shell Rotella 15W-40 break
in oil, then Synthetic Amsoil Z Rod 10W-40 oil, wix oil filter, gas
filters, new vaccum hoses, PvC Valve,

had a leaking rear brake connection that is being fixed.

Just thought I hadn't thought of the power steering pump replacement at
this time NEED A PART NUMBER.
My Dash AC needs to be charged and will have this done to see if it holds
the charge. It has the 12A
Not decided if I will change out the AC compressor.
The Starter is 3 years old and will reuse it.
The alternator is working fine and will leave it (I carry a spare)
Mechanical Fuel Pump - just changed it before heading to Portland. Carry a
spare.
I have an inline electric fuel pump with me as well and question - do I
have this installed as well as continue to use the mechanical with the
electric for back up???
will install new windshield wipers.

How's that so far. Am I forgetting anything?
Regards
Dwayne

I do not mean to be spending your money but if you are going to be replacing the radiator, I would do it now. You will never overheat that new one. I highly suggest it.

The last rebuilt engine we installed (not from Dick P. but built to his recommendations) came from the rebuilder with Rotella and EOS already inside and a WIX filter installed. He did not want us destroying the new cam and lifters so he delivered it with the Rotella oil already in it.

Hey;

If you're stuck in Kennewick, go see a movie at the Carmike Theater. We
went and saw the 11:30am showing of X-Men Days of Future Past (2D)
yesterday and we were the only 2 there. We didn't even have to whisper and
we didn't turn off the cell phones. Go to McDougales and have a Guinness
from the tap and watch the Columbia go by (while people try to launch their
boats). The weather has been great...

Impressive list of up-grades all at once.
Consider getting Ken's electric windshield wiper kit, and installing a JC4 auxiliary vacuum pump for the brakes.

Well Dwayne, Dr. Donald and I were thinking today about what else you
probably should install and/or fix while you are laid up in Kennewick. I
told him that you were affected by the air in the region, and he, being a
Dr., had a different opinion, which I will not publish on the net. (grin)
He thought perhaps that you needed to swap out that perfectly good final
drive that DJ and Tommy just installed for a 3:70 limited slip. He thought
new Alcoa wheels, that are shiny, as well as new tires might be indicated
as well. If you don't have DJ's braided stainless steel transmission lines,
now would be a good time to do those. Of course, a new aluminum radiator
with a Curtis 2 piece shroud is necessary, too.
What I am really trying to say is that if you install all the stuff
you are thinking about, you are adding a WHOLE BUNCH of untested parts to
an engine install that is complicated enough all by itself. When, NOT IF,
you have trouble down the road, you will not know which one of those new
parts are causing the trouble that might occur. Think this all through very
carefully, and trust what Dick Paterson tells you. He will not steer you
down the MS Garmin Path.

Well I am staying with the final drive and new axles, have the alcoa rims -
just need to use some good spit polish when I am able to bend and crawl
around on my knees.
the rest of it Dick laid out a list of parts that should be there for the
engine.

I am getting really bored waiting to get back on the road. However I am
looking forward to that T Shirt - size large in either white or black
background. thank you very much.

I have worked a little today on the schedule on Route 66 that I will pass
onto the Wagon Master.

The weather here has been wonderful, my care giver has gone beyond the call
of duty. . . .
I have to say that this reserved time has me tending to the leg a lot more
than if we were on the road each day. the healing process is moving along
nicely. the bruising - and a lot of it from the crotch to the ankle is
starting to fad. I have a lot more movement without pain. I can stand on
it fine but still unable to take a step without some support. I figure the
muscel was cut for the surgery to insert the plate

Dwayne - how did the engine fail? Reason I ask is because a lot of comment has been made about the oil cooler being contaminated from an engine failure. I'm not sure I agree if it has been properly cleaned out. I feel it is important at this time to carefully look over the current rad for any signs of corrosion or other deterioration. My guide has always been "any green, it's gone". Also consider overall age of the radiator. The other thing to consider is that you climb mountains so having mucho radiator capacity is a good thing. I would not say a radiator is one of those "oughta do it because the engine is out and it is so much easier" kind of things.

About the only thing I didn't change on ours was the PS pump. It was making no noise, had no leaks, and worked fine. It is my belief and experience that these pumps are bullet proof. That being said, when I first pulled Smurffie out of the barn the first thing I heard when I turned the wheel was a pump groan. Oh crap!!! Turned out I forgot to refill it after I disconnected the return line. All is well now.

Oh Crap, I am so screwed. I've changed EVERYTHING (except the PS pump)!!

So far JimH's "when, NOT IF" comment is true. Every short trip out for testing has found something. Nothing major, but some are deal breakers with the CFO (fan roar with normal temps). Some have been things I DIDN'T change (Onan fuel pump and Onan carb rebuild, I have the kit in stock though).

That all being said we have very reluctantly concluded that we will have to cancel the Route 66 trip for several reasons. With all the work being finished we would not leave on time. With the current schedule, we would probably wouldn't catch up until Kingman, and thus would not experience the real Route 66 again.

I am also worried that all those little shake out problems would add up to be not so little on a 5500 mile run. Not fun and we don't want to be a burden or worry to others on the trip.

And the last reason: Hupy is right. Sooo - our reason for not going is it's all Hupy's fault!!! (Very Big Grin) (So now we can get DanG off the "it's Dan's fault" hotseat.)

Darn, steve. In my rational brain, I know that you are making the wise and
prudent choice. But my emotional brain is disappointed. But what is best
for you does not mean that I am going to be pleased. So far this trip has
been a bunch of highs and lows. Just life as it is, not as we wish it to be.

Darn, steve. In my rational brain, I know that you are making the wise and prudent choice. But my emotional brain is disappointed.

You don't have to tell us about it. We fully understand the emotional aspect of this. It was going to be a great experience with some people who, by great chance and circumstance, we already know and like. Work on Smurffie is continuing full snort and we will be on the road very soon. We plan on a series of trips, starting short and getting longer as we gain confidence and experience.

To make it a bit worse we were also planning on visiting friends in Curlew WA for their wedding anniversary.

And the last reason: Hupy is right. Sooo - our reason for not going is it's all Hupy's fault!!! (Very Big Grin) (So now we can get DanG off the "it's Dan's fault" hotseat.)
[/quote]

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Just getting a chance to read some posts tonight and came across this one. So sorry for y'all that can't make this trip. I too had thought Teri and I would hook up in Mo. And tag along westward with y'all. That was before I fell ill. I do need the rest so let it be Jim's fault for a while now. Teri and I have never really made a long trip with other GMCers so would not know how to act. We will probably just take as much of the back roads of 66 as we can on our next trip west.
We are, this weekend, sleeping in our GMC for the first time since the Branson convention. Feels great. Will return home tomorrow then back out for a week starting next Sunday, Father's Day. Life is oh so good when sleeping in our GMC.

Dan, so glad that you're strong enough to get out of the house, even if it
is only for a short time. Yes, life is good in a GMC. Last night and
tonight finds us here in Potato Creek State Park as the guests of the Great
Lakers GMC Club. The rolling rally group has grown to 5 instead of two. The
Boyd's and Paradis's and Harpers have caught up or will today sometime.
From here, we will go to the Chicago area to Oak Park Village. There we
will be met by Ron Morrison as our host. Ron and Pattie Smith will hook up
with us as will Glenn and Darlene Gregory from Thunder Bay, Ontario. We
continue to be sad because Dwayne and Sharon Jacobson are not physically
with us, but WE FEEL THEIR PRESENCE AROUND US CONSTANTLY. They are waiting
for their new Dick Paterson engine to arrive on Tuesday. Another GMC'er,
Bill Guise is transporting a recently rebuilt Manny Tranny from the Kent,
Washington area to Kennewick, so that the new engine will have a new
gearbox. Good Combination. Dwayne and Sharon are somehow enduring their
isolation in the tri-city area by hanging out in a nice Motel, lounging
around poolside, viewing the columbia river from their deck, and in general
giving Dwayne much needed time to heal from his recent hip surgery. There
is a purpose in what happens in our lives, and we do not control it. Have a
great Sunday, all of you.

Goodmorning GMC'rs

Today marks 2 weeks since surgery and today Sharon removed the large
bandage - 10in long x 3 in wide that revealed a healed
3 in long incision. So after sponge baths I get to Shower!!!!! Yah.
Still some discomfort especially is I twist or jar the leg. Have to still
use the crutches but each day I navigate a flight of stairs up and down.
Yesterday we drove to Walla Walla and walked Main Street. Nicely restored
building dating back to the late 1800's. Lots of wine tasting shops,
sidewalk cafe's, Art shops and yes a small Sears.
Am I bored - Yes. Would so love to be on the Rolling Rally enjoying the
company, the shared meals, exploring and laughing together.

This coming week will tell whether we escape the Hotel for the comforts of
GMC home living.

Keep the stories and pics coming Jim.
Miss your company Judy.

Regards
Dwayne and Sharon

Holed up in a Hotel in Richland, Washington
We drove to see the Columbia River Side residence that Jerry and Sharon
Work used to own. Also drove out the Lab where Jerry Worked.

If you know places we should see in the Tri Cities area please.
If you are anywhere near here contact us
Please do something
Dwayne

Good to hear Dwayne. Glad things are progressing for you. It is so nice to have such a caregiver as you and I have.
Did you hit the Big House, pennetentuary, while in Walla Walla? Lots of sites to see over there.
Best wishes for your recovery,
Dan

I can only imagine how you and Sharon are missing the fun of the trip; but,
as Jim said, there is a plan and this is giving you healing time. A
blessing in disquise.

A story about Richland, WA. Young Texan friends of ours were
working/living there about 16 years ago when their daughter was born. Her
mother sent her a vial of Texas soil so that Marlena could be "born over
Texas soil". That's how strongly we feel about that here.

Continue the healing. All that walking should help keep you in shape for
"the rest of the trip".

Sandra
