I picked up a timing light from Harbor Freight (the one with the adjustable advance). Hooked it up and no light when i pulled the trigger. Thought it was a dud so returned it for an exchange. Next one same thing, strobe will not fire but the little power indicator light on the side is on. Is it two duds in a row or is it me? The only thing I did different from the instructions is I hooked up the power connectors to a 12 volt lead from the house system rather than the engine battery as the cords are to short. The only other thing was to attach the inductive lead to #1 spark plug number with the arrow pointing to the plug. Am i missing something?

Otherwise, the HF timing light had pretty good reviews

Really? A low quality HF item? (tries not to giggle)

George,
*1 The fist one I got was bad too, second one the high tension lead pickup melted.

*2 for hooking up a timing light on the GMC the dash cig-lighter plug is probably the most convenient location. Just get a plug from radio shack and add some wires that you can clip to or wire it directly to the timing light power leads. This will keep those leads up out of they way of that whirling fan and hot exhaust manifold.

*3 the high tension lead pickup on those is not real sensitive. If the lead wire you are trying to hook to is touching anything else ( particularly metal ) it will ground out the pulse across the surface of the lead and the light will not flash or flash randomly.

Good luck....

I have one of those that I picked up at a garage sale it works nicely and the adjustable advance is accurate . I wouldn't think your choice of battery would make a difference but I would connect it to the engine battery to be sure before I would bring it back.

I had a "Power-Fist" brand timing light for a while - from Princess Auto (the Canadian version of Harbor Freight!).

Once it was working - it still sucked. But when I bought it - I thought it was dead as well. I found I had to press the trigger button VERY hard to make it work. In the end - I bought a slightly better Equus light and it seems like a bit better quality...

I looked at the picture on the HF website and it's physically different from my Power-Fist one - so none of this may help!
