Well I am taking it up to the dealership to get the passenger exhaust manifold sealed up.I also have had alt/bat troubles in the past and Luckily its only 102 miles from my house. If I don't make it I have 100 miles towing so...I am just afaid to break bolts off in the head and
being up in the air on a lift makes it that much easier. These guys work on the coaches everyday so I am camping tonight there to get on the lift first thing tomorrow morning.Wish us luck!

Anthony,
You might ask Jeff if you can get by with out a gasket.
I have been able to run the Cad 500 w/o gaskets as the bolt pattern is great.
It came from the factory that way, but if the manifold is warped, it might not work.
Jeff will make the right call.

Well,I went up,Manifold came off EASY ,like Butter.Suface sanded flat ,RTV,Gasket new grade 8 bolts and sealed up.Now we hear leakage from the Y crossover. It is not that bad so we head home Monday afternoon.I get almost home and I think I am having a vapor lock getting back on the highway, but no.I have a half tank showing in the aux and absolute nothing in the main so I have run out of gas.I get a few gallonas down the filler and splash the carb and off to the house.Never let either tank get below half is the New standard here!!!

Jim,The exhaust manifold on the Olds kinda freaked me out as it is paper thin and not enough bolts in my opinion to hold it on and the center 2 siamesed like a Chevy.I been a 472/500 guy since 79 and never had anything cheaper like this before.I even think the Remflex would fall apart on the Olds.I also got to see a bunch of heads in the core area and not too thrilled either with the strange rocker arms amd retainers, looks even cheesier than the original Cad setup.Lucky mine has only 93,000 miles so I probably wont have to deal for quite a while.

Snip

Tony,

I guess you where not here.....
We had a discussion about this some time (maybe years) back.
For some of my career, I was a fastener engineer. A thing I learned early on when doing turbo adaptations was that the temper gets blown out of Gr 8 fasteners at exhaust system temperatures. So, if you put in Gr8 at Gr8 tension (torque) they will relax when they get hot. You do get the advantage of the better material and quality control, but you can not count on higher tension than what you could get with a Gr2.

This will all be part of a presentation I hope to have together for Chipawa Falls, but please do not hold your breath.

Correctamundo...this why I always retorque the exhaust bolts after getting a new installation or repair hot the first time. Gotta do it when they are hot for the best results and longevity. Do it on hose clamps too, just don't twist 'em on down enough to cut the hose!

Terry,

If you did use gr8s, don't try to pull them back to Gr8 load, they will probably snap.

I would really like to meet the guy that started saying that retorquing (retensioning) fasteners is a waste of time. I would say some very nasty things to him....

Funny you should mention hose clamps.
The situation there is very similar but very different.(??)
Back in racing days, we had hose clamps slacking off and even took to safety wiring them to not avail. It was years before I found out that the rubber or whatever was creeping out from under the load of the clamp. Now, if you have a critical application, you can use constant tension clamp$ that will hold as the rubber moves.
