We finally got our hot water heater together and it's working just fine. We put in a 220V version element like several of you recommended. It's not supposed to burn out if on with a dry tank. However, we're considering a timer. Here's one we found on Amazon that we're thinking of getting.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002RL9UUQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=15VHOF90FHLRR&coliid=I1FMGGYJHQ3E2A&psc=1

We don't understand the electrical jargon well so if someone could help on whether this would work with the heating element please advise. The description says - "This unit is rated at 120Volt 60Hz 15AMP, 1875Watt Resistive 8AMP, 120Volt, 1000Watt Tungsten 120Volt, 8AMP, 1000Volt Ballast".

Is 15 amps OK? This one is digital but there are others that are mechanical - a dial and the units click as they count down. Any help with or comment on this is greatly appreciated.

Mickey,
Sorry to put a hole in your boat, but the element WILL burn out if not covered with water. Without being covered by water it will melt! The 220 V rated element just heats the water faster. I would suggest a timer that turns the heater on and off. The one that you have listed is good for 15 amps and that should be OK. You will just have to remember to turn the WH on 30 minutes before you need to use it. How many watt is your element rated at? You can determine your Amp load by this formula. W/V=A Watts divided by Volts equals Amps or load.
I have always let my heater thermostat control the heater. I have never had any issues in any of the coached that we have owned.

I used a mechanical type timer. Unfortunately, it's max time was 15 minutes. Not enough time to heat the 6 gallon tank. Removed it. I did keep a switch in line to turn it off, when no need was indicated. Especially, when the coach is parked, or in storage.

Tom,

I switch off the breaker for the water heater in the panel under Double Trouble's (Avion) sink when I store it for the winter.

Rob M.

John,

I am not familiar with the water heater used in a GMC as I have Avions. The drain for the heater tank is above the heater element so
when it is drained it leaves the element covered. HOWEVER, the temperature control and overheat switch are mounted on the outside of
the tank well above the drained tank water level. When I got back to the USA last year I found the breaker in the panel under the
bathroom sink for the water heater ON and the element was burned out. I suspect the water that remained in the water heater was
heated to the boiling point and evaporated leaving the element uncovered so it burned out.

I have added a step to my storage procedure to turn off the water heater breaker.

nichrome tubular water heater elements will dry-fire, same as a rangetop or oven element.

It looks like that timer will work and it has adequate capacity, but I think you may be happier with just a simple rotary "mechanical" timer. I use one and simply give it a full turn once I arrive or want hot water. It is a 1 hour unit and relatively inexpensive.
