Well... I suspect that I'm not the only one that has recently had issues with logging in to the forum.

I saw the tail end of a post (Dan can't log in) where a remedy was deleting cookies.

I did it and things are now working properly.

I'm posting this in a new thread with the specific title so that its immediately visible to more folks.

If this is a complete coincidence - and the issue(s) were fixed in the background - THANK YOU to whoever did it.

I just tried that (again) and it still does not work. I think that Ken Burton and I must be the only ones who use tree view which still does not work. The workaround for this problem is to use flat view to set the "I've read this post" flag for all current messages in a thread. Ken guesses that those who think the problem is fixed must be using "flat view" by default and I would like those who have "fixed" the problem to please verify that?

Thanks.

Yep, flat view is what I use for all four browsers that I tested on the login routine. Everything seems to be ok.

So that does not fit out failure scenario.

Flat view clears all messages in the thread because it displays all messages at one time.

Tree view only displays messages that you click on and allows you to look at some while ignoring or saving others for later just like you are probably doing in the topic view.

What scenario, that it was *only* failing in tree view? Nope, I've been having the login problem and always have been in flat view. OTOH, I've not experienced much/any problems with the "read" icons.

We are talking about two different failures.

The "tree view" problem surfaced immediately on the start up of the new version of the forum that came on line when the email system was down a few weeks ago.

The login failures started 2 days ago and now appears to be something stored in the cookies of some browsers.

I use flat view. Switched to tree view to see if the problem existed for me there. I had no unread messages so figured I would try again later. Didn't set tree view in my profile, and CRS kicked in, so still default to flat view. No problems with flat view. Didn't like tree view, but it looks handy for trying to figure out which post someone is responding to when they say something like, "I agree" and nothing else.

It seems to me that flat view in the forum is only a little better than just plain email. Tree view shows you exactly which posts you have and have not read and their relationship to each other. In order to set up for tree view you go to "control panel", then "account settings". Scroll to the bottom of the settings and you will see the "default topic view" setting one short of the bottom. Give it a try, you might like it. And thanks for replying about which view you use.

Worked for me! Clearing cookies not only allowed me to log in, it got rid of the laborious task of scrolling down to get to the posts.
