It is not to elegant but it works.
I have now tested this failure on 4 machines. Two XP, One android, and One Windows 7. I have tried Chrome under XP and Android, IE under XP and Win 7, and Firefox under XP, Win 7, and an Android native browser under Android. All of these combinations fail the same way.
The problem is with the "tree view" display of messages.
The temporary work around is to read the messages as normal. Then before returning to the topic list click on the "FLAT VIEW" square button. Then to return to the Topic list go to the top of the listing and find the line that says: Home >> GMC >> GMCnet >> . Click on the word "GMCnet" to return to the topic listing and everything in that thread only will be permanently marked as "read".
As I said, it is not elegant but it will work until Eugene has time to find the issue.

OK. I went to 2 Wheel Tuesday tonight. While I was there I put on some rubber gloves so I would not catch anything and actually picked up and used an Apple tablet (Ipad). I was told it running Safari. Guess what? It is failing EXACTLY the same way.
So now Mr. Apple user, please tell me are you looking at topics in tree view? Does the tree view properly turn off the "unread" icons and make them blue after you read each message? If it does turn it off when you close out the topic, when you return to the same topic are the same messages still turned off (Blue in color)?
I now have tried 4 different machines attached to the Internet 3 different way using 5 different browsers and ALL fail.

Thanks. I just tried the ipad tonight because so far nothing else I have tried works. Dan and Eugene say they can not recreate the problem. I really think they are not going into tree view.
Since Dan got that Apple, All I hear from him is Apple, Apple, APPLE.

It finally dawned on me what you guys are talking about. I've never used tree view before. I just click on the last post icon on the forum list and scroll up until I see something I've read before then read until the end, or I get bored, or whatever. Simpler interface as far as I can tell.

"I've never used tree view before. I just click on the last post icon on the forum "
That's the way I do it. Works so well, keeps the thread together, so easy to read back if someone doesn't quote a key little piece of msg responding to.

armandminnie wrote on Wed, 21 May 2014 20:12What is "the last post icon" on the forum? Where is it and what does it look like?
Sure Armand
It is the small arrow between the red (for unread) button and the topic name is flat view. Only there if there is an unread post..

In flat view, on the far right column, titled "Last message" there is a right-arrow immediately after the username.

Right, but that is the last msg.
the arrow on the left side goes to the last msg you read, maybe several from the end. ?

Yeah, you're using 'last read' icon.
I'm working the forum like Kerry: just click on the last post icon on the forum list and scroll up until I see something I've read before then read until the end, or I get bored, or whatever.
I read the email listserv subject lines and snippet to keep an eye on the action. When something interests me I go into the forum. Typically, the last post icon is where I like to start and then work up the thread.

What left arrow Don? I don't see a left arrow anywhere on the screen?????
Yes, the right arrow will take you to the last message. You'll have to scroll up to see posts you missed. At least that's the way I've worked forums since they came to popularity in 2004 or so.

When everything is working correctly, you do not have to scroll up to see posts you missed. The arrow to the left of the red/blue icon will take you to the FIRST message in the thread that you have not read. If it is not behaving that way, something is not quite right. There have been extended periods when this forum behaved that way, most notably before the last "crash" and the one before that, you had to scroll up to find the last post you had read. It is working as it should for me now.
