Hey Gang-

So I have been out on the road for a month and my transmission failed....
bummer for sure.

Is the GMC transmission just not up for the job of long periods of travel?

Do I have to check the level every time I look at it?

I thought it would be a little more stout than it is....
Any insight would be appreciated about things to watch out for with these transmissions.

Thanks!
CR

Curt, the tranny is up to the chore. Not sure how much you tow behind though. My first trans did great. Had a little leak so every 500 miles, usually second gas fill up, I pulled the stick and made sure it was ok, every 500 religiously. Was towing a Pontiac Vibe gt. Lost an engine. Too much slack in the chain but after some measurements Manny said swap transmission, new chain would not work. Well, this thing leaked worse than the old one, not Manny's fault, so I made sure I kept a close check on fluid. Lost another engine. Had the engine builder pull all the stuff and replace gaskets on the tranny, no leaks anywhere. So, it does not leak, I don't check nearly as often. But, if one sees trans fluid anywhere then better be checking the fluid on a regular basis. I had 35 k on the old tranny, but it was last built in 93 so no telling how many miles were on it.
This may not have been your problem but I am a true believer in the 425 being a good tranny for our coaches, with moderate weight toads.

The 425TH in our application, is good for 100K. The PO, (my father-in-law) had it rebuilt at 106k back in 93. It now has 114K. How many miles does yours have on it when it failed?

Curt,

The TH-425 has an exceptional reputation for sturdiness and reliability.
It's capable of running in the GMC for 100,000+ miles with no more
attention than checking fluid level occasionally and changing it every
25,000 miles or so. If you're towing a heavy load, you should install a
temperature gauge and keep the transmission temperature below 200*F if
possible. Downshifting when going uphill with a heavy load is essential.
I have a policy of never being in 3rd gear below 45 mph and shift down
from 2nd to 1st below 25 mph (VERY rare).

Since the TH-425 is so long out of production, repair parts are scarce,
some of them impossible to obtain -- unless you buy a Manny Tranny. Manny
has virtually cornered the market on many parts and has new parts made to
his specifications when necessary. He is THE source for GMC MH TH-425's.

Call Manny.

Hey Curt;

Not sure where you are located, but Manny has seeded his transmissions
across the country for folks in situations that you are in. I don't know
where they are located (well I do know there is one up here in the Pacific
Northwest) but someone here will probably know.

How do you know the tranny has failed? Sometimes they get "Morning Sickness" Usually cause low on fluid.Rev that baby up after making sure its full and it should engage in either reverse or drive.

Thanks for all the comments. I am sure it will get sorted out but I definitely don't want to go through that again.
I think a leak sprung up somewhere we'll just have to find out where and fix it.
