Still trying to get my 73 back on the road . Another novice thing holding me up - what is the proper size bolt to hold the thermostat housing (outlet-engine water) down to the intake manifold?
The parts book shows item #9 on page 8-8: SCREW,CAP,HEXAGON HEAD Part No. 9418918 but that does not help me much at the hardware store. I don't seem to have any bolts around here that fit to check the size with.
Thanks

George,

Try a 1/4" x 20 National Coarse.

As far as length goes I can't remember if the threaded holes in the manifold extend into the water jacket or not. If they do not go
into the water jacket measure the depth of each hole with a tooth pick and add the thickness of the thermostat housing and buy a
stainless steel bolt that is a bit shorter then use a flat and lock washer. If the holes do extend into the water jacket do the same
thing making sure the bolts are not long enough to extend into the water jacket.

My guess is that he bolts are 1/4" x 20 x 3/4"

Regards,
Rob M.

My guess? 3/8" - 16 x 1"

My guess is a 5/16"-18.
When I swapped motors a week ago I used a 1/2" socket to remove and tighten
down the bolts! JWID

If you use stainless bolts be sure to coat them with Never-seez.

I'm with Bruce. Too important a connection for 1/4" & doesn't require the
strength for 3/8". 5/16" should be just about right.

Why don't you just buy 2 each of all 3? The start of your essential "junk
box". You'll save the cost in gas avoiding the next trip to the hardware.

My guess is 5/16"x18. I am pretty sure those holes go all the way through and into the water jacket of the intake manifold. When you install them put some sealant like Permatex on the threads to keep them from leaking coolant up the threads.

I am pretty sure it takes a 5/16. Only place open today is Home Depot and only had a 5/16 18 and a 5/16 24. The 18 will go in about a turn and the 24 none at all. So as was mentioned above, I will try and find a 5/16 20 tomorrow.

I have another coach here that I guess I could remove one of the bolts to size it but I am so paranoid with these bolts I am hesitant to put a wench to anything now days. My problems started when one sheared off on the 73 while replacing the thermostat almost a year ago. Had to get another manifold etc and finally now getting around to putting it back together. It looked like the PO had replaced one of the bolts with a standard one instead of a grade 5 like I see on the other coach. Also it was longer and protruded into the water and was well corroded. Well that's the one that sheared off. I had the other correct bolt (1 & 1/4 inch)and got new SS ones but in the mean time misplaced them all. (a sign of old age---me not the bolt) So here I am still messing with the thing!

By the way, what is the equivalent grade 5 bolt in stainless steel?

I wouldn't recommend stainless. No point mixing metals where you don't need to. I would try removing one from the other coach. It might come out easily, and if it does, you're all set. If it doesn't come out easily, no harm done.

Agreed!

A 1/2 socket means the bolt is 5/16" diameter. National fine (24 TPI) would not be necessary so my "Final Answer" is 5/16 x 18 - 3/4
or 1".

Hey, I just found it here: http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=19556

There is no such thing as 5/16"x20. It is 5/16x18. If it is that hard to turn with a wrench then gently chase the threads with a 5/15x18 tap.

I've got the original manifold from my 75 in the garage. Took a thermo housing bolt out and it is 5/16X1" coarse thread 18 TPI. The threaded holes in the manifold do go through in to the water passage. Bolt has three radial lines on the head making it a grade 5 and the letters TR on it. Don't know what TR means. Like Ken says maybe you need to run a tap in to clean out the manifold threads.

TR appears to be a makers stamp
I found this on the Corvette forum.

Thanks guys for the information. Will get a tap to clean it up and the proper bolt and maybe some day I get to hear this gal run again. Love the sound of its SpinTech Muffler
