Im not sure why I am thinking about this but.... Anyone thought of using a pull down screen (I even thought of those white pull down window blinds) and one of the newer super small pico projectors?

I thought I would mount the screen to the ceiling just behind the side door that way people sitting in the captains chairs, on the couch or at the two reclining chars I plan for my interior can see the screen with no trouble? The "pico projectors are only about 2" think and have 720P capability... And some are powered by rechargeable batteries...

About the only issue I can think of is how do I shade the wrap around front windows?

Any thoughts would be appreciated... I may be way off base here... But this is what happens with too much free time... LOL

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Those little projectors are not going to have a lot of lumens. A small home projector would work though. Epson makes several small LCD home projectors that are light canons. No need to worry about shutting out all of the light.

Steve,

This has to be a great idea. One problem I can foresee is it might be dim for the daytime no matter how you shade the windows. The idea of a window shade doubling as a screen solves a problem or two. Might easily be room behind an upper cabinet to mount it notwithstanding present window treatments. I don't know energy consumption, no one has done the math that I have seen. Maybe and probably Dan Gregg has thought about this. Hope he chimes in. Audio will be a little of a concern, too, I guess, but it might be a plus to have it with the projector near the ears listening to it. Could make up for hearing deficit without blasting everyone else out. Might be able to put the projector inside an upper cabinet, or under it like the Gregg setup with his receiver and router if I recall correctly. Open the door, pull down the screen and enjoy yourself. Oftentimes, the screens are on sale reasonably priced on Woot or Ebay if I remember correctly. If the picture is dim, you could always zoom down the picture to concentrate the lumens until night fell. People say you wouldn't notice better than 720 pixels and it is true for the most part, but some screens I have seen receiving satellite TV are noticeably sharper and more realistic than the screens I have bought at 720p. Experts say you wouldn't notice the difference at 720p under 32" but I won't buy another one like it. If you get the typical campground cable, you wouldn't notice the difference as the signals are pretty low definition in my very limited experience. I guess in five years, the cable for campgrounds will be upgraded to where you would like the sharper projector. Sounds very interesting, and may be lighter and less space consuming than stand alone televisions. Good luck with your work.

For the front I say no,However,I have 3 projectors at all times. One for the back.It sits on the headboard hatch and has about a 4 foot pull down screen at the foot on the window. The other big projector I project either behind the door Under the belt line or ideally its between the fridge vent and the rear window. The rear projector is a Sony 110 volts but is small enough and uses an MR 16 $5 Lamp it can run on a small inverter. The outside projector is a semi-large board room LCD machine. You can find a big one for relatively cheap as everything now is so hdmi and DlP that even a year old model can be had for a couple hun.Replacement Lamp though can cost up to $600.the pico can work nice for you in the back.the front I feel depending on your floor plan on my experimenting.Big enough flat screen behind the passenger seat and a nice big amplified mirror on the vacuum door.I could go on and on and on.

any Opinions on how many lumens would be sufficient. from a quick search i see units ranging from 70 to 3000 lumens

Depends on the screen size and the amount of ambient light. I'd estimate a 300-500 lumen projector would give good results with a 50 inch screen in a darkened space. LED projectors with that output cost about $500.

Steve, I'd go with a little more firepower. The problem with the GMC is the ambient light. Unless you have the cockpit closed off, there is going to be a lot of light. Projectors need a lot of lumens to overcome even a little ambient light.

Ive had good success with epsons 3 lcd projectors. I've got a 705hd. After I researched and bought one for the church, I liked it so much I bought one for myself. I use in the living room for a 4'x8' picture. Its a few years old, so it isn't as powerful as the new ones, but with only 2000 lumens I do not have to close the curtains in the living room when I want to crank it up (light control in the church was problematic with no curtains). They have a power save mode, if you do not need all of the light, that makes the bulb last longer, but the replacement lamp is also relatively inexpensive.

The newest model has 2800 lumens and runs about $550 new.

Mine has a keystone correction, so you could place it in the cabinet opposite the screen and aim down.

If I ever make it to a rally, I could bring the 705 along to demo, though I went with a 32" lcd because I had the spot for it...

LOL thats pretty cool, I did't think of using the side of the coach as a screen. Audio and video source could still stay inside, just run a video feed out to the projector and put a little extra line on the speakers to pull them outside for movies.

Use Bluetooth and no need to run wires outside. I'm using a small Bluetooth speaker with home TV set as rear speaker. Works in this application.

The little ones pretty much suck. I have a small one from Brookstone, and it is "ok" in a meeting when the customer doesn't have one, and easy to carry, but they do not work well as an entertainment device. You also cannot reverse the image to rear project with them...
