This is a great product and collection of GMC related files. I love it.
Thanks Billy.

Now I'm waiting to see if the copycat version from GMCMI has anything additional making it also worth getting.

A couple of things to watch out for. The first is that the it can be
installed upside down into the usb port. It doesn't hurt anything, but it
just won't work that way. The second is that the part that plugs into the
usb port can come apart from the holder. I downloaded everything to my
laptop. I REALLY like the slick user interface that it comes with. Cudos to
bDub...

It is not a copycat version. In fact GMCMI came up with the idea of putting GMCMI back newsletters , Rosters, etc on a thumb drive. Billy Massey, the GMCMI Membership Manager, then proposed that we also include other GMC information and call it the GMCMI Swiss Army Knife of information. Of course, we needed Board approval to do this. However, before our Board next met Billy pre-emptied us by coming out with his personal version.

The GMCMI thumb drive is available to members at a cost of $20 and has more GMC information than the Swiss Army Knife plus all that GMCMI information.

We would not have approved calling it a "Swiss Army Knife" as a search of the Internet by one of the Board members showed that is copyrighted name.

Being bloated with bureaucracy does not help when getting something done. The first one to get to market usually gets the prize. The second or third one to enter the market is working at a big disadvantage. They are usually stuck needing to produce a better or cheaper product just to get in the game. Did you ever hear of the second or third person to market the pet rock?

Installing GMC related files on an easily transportable thumb drive is hardly a unique idea or product limited to GMCMI. Making the thumb drive into a cute GMC package was unique.

Billy put out a proposal (testing the market) and we said "yes". So Billy made the product. Meanwhile GMCMI did nothing as far as we knew and so they are now stuck in "me too" status along with a promise that someday they might do the same thing.

I think that you said the proposed name was "GMCMI Swiss Army Knife". Was that also already copyrighted? I have not investigated but I think not. I also believe that is really a trademark and not a copyright you are talking about.

I have a neighbor / friend in the music business. He registered a company as "Xxxxxx's Guitar Center". "Guitar Center" was already a registered and operating company. It was determined that while Guitar Center was indeed a trademark. "Xxxxxx's Guitar Center" was not. If the name had been unique like Cheetos, or Parkay, or IBM, or Xerox, and not common English words the outcome probably would have been different.

I use to write technical books and manuals. We copyrighted everything. All that meant was that someone can not copy the contents and redistribute them as if they their own. We were the second largest publisher in the world. We did not register a copyright for everything we did. We just had to state the book was copyrighted in the book. I think you meant to say trademark.

The same goes for the fellow who tried to help the community by writing and hosting the Online Parts Program. He did a great service (for free) and offered to work with GMCMI. He instead was rebuffed and told that someday we will do the same thing on our own. You should have worked with him and developed any changes or improvements GMCMI wanted.

His program is on line and working. So far the GMCMI one is stuck in bureaucracy as vaporware currently in "me too" status.

I especially like the comment about him getting hit by a truck. The GMCnet email server you are using is in someone's house. What happens if Patrick gets hit by a truck or a tornado hits his house? My answer is: The server will eventually will get repaired by someone and hopefully Patrick himself recovers OK. Neither of these events will be life changing events to the GMC community. If is were an issue, then back up services could be arranged but I fail to see the need or expense for live on line backup of an inventory list and parts look up program.

I am not usually critical of GMCMI but I am on these two recent GMCMI actions.

This what happens when you have non-technical people on boards trying to make technical decisions. You should start every project with "What is the business need for this project?". I have seen this happen all too often with school boards. They usually just delay things through indecision. If GMCMI wants to get into the IT business then get some IT technical people on the board and make decisions on whether you can do it better, faster, and cheaper in house, or it is better done outside.

Keep up the great work Billy.

"Swiss army knife" (un-capitalized) may or may not be copyrighted/trademarked, but it's become sort of akin to other products such as Kleenex, Kotex, Tampax, and a whole lot of other things that have simply become generic descriptions of the basic objects which were so-named.

I can't imagine that more than one person came up with the pet rock bit, but who even remembers the name of the first?

You're very welcome, Ken. Thanks for the kudos, Gary. These are still
availabe and would make cherished gifts. ;-)

www.bdub.net/GMCers/

If you think of anything else you'd like to see on it, let me know.
While it won't help anything, but perhaps his attitude, Gene wanted
Shooter's "4th of July" to play upon insertion. So I accomidated him with
that. :-) (note: not all devices respond to auto insertion playback)

This has been a fun project. I expect to mail out another batch of little
GMCs on Thursday.

AFAIK, they are already there, You just have to be a GMCMI member to see it.

Thankx much also
I'm still around and allowing everybody to contribute to the OLP
maybe someday soon, it will contain more information than the other one does if everybody helps out.
Then you wont have to belong to a specific club to get certain GMC info, we'll all have it.

Thankx
